Snoozing Through the Bland Secret Society and Gentle Homoeroticism of ‘The Skulls’ [Horror Queers Podcast]

    More like The Snooze

We’re hurtling towards the end of March, which has been filled with a variety of disparate titles such as Friday the 13th Part 7, Diabolique, Scary Movie 2 and a special bonus episode on Servant season 2.

For the second last week of the month, we’re returning to the turn of the century with director Rob Cohen‘s curiously boring secret society film, The Skulls.

In the film, Joshua Jackson is Luke, a poor Yale Law student who aspires to join the titular secret society to improve his lot in life. But when his new status conflicts with his friendship with Will (Hill Harper) and Chloe (Leslie Bibb), will Luke side with his “soul mate” Caleb (Paul Walker) and the powerful figures of the organization? Or is he in dangerously over his head?

Episode 118 – The Skulls (2000) feat. Immortal Graves

We’re in the mood for a trashy secret society thriller, which is too bad because Rob Cohen’s The Skulls (2000) ain’t it. Helping us overcome our amnesia about what exactly happens in this snooze fest is Twitch host extraordinaire Steffi (aka Immortal Graves). Predictably things get a little silly as we tackle robot thesis projects, Leslie Bibb’s career, and rich white people nonsense like rowing and lacrosse.

Plus: Commemorative film tattoos, dumbwaiter horror, and ridiculous character names that we can’t keep straight (Percy & Grimace?)

But for real: why isn’t this damn film more homoerotic?!

    Cross out The Skulls!

Coming up on Wednesday: We’re wrapping up March with a dip into Chucky territory with our favorite entry in the Child’s Play franchise: Bride of Chucky (1998)!

    – Joe & Trace

P.S. Subscribe to our Patreon for tons of additional content! Throughout March we’ve tackled hillbilly horror with episodes on the remakes of Wrong Turn (2021), The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as well as the controversial episode of The X-Files “Home”.
