Updating a story first posted here on Aug. 7, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder has contributed a newly recorded cover of Tom Petty‘s “Room at the Top” to the TV show Bad Monkey, which premieres Aug. 14 on Apple TV+. It’s one of 29 Petty covers that will be heard in the show and on the show’s soundtrack album, which will be released Oct. 4 by WaterTower Music.
Bad Monkey stars Vince Vaughan in an adaptation of Carl Hiassen’s Florida-set book of the same name. Per music supervisor Tony Von Pervieux, the creative team initially “discussed creating around 10 Tom Petty covers to use throughout the season. In the end, we scored 21 brand new, unreleased covers. Each artist was hand-picked to compliment the vibe of the show but were also favorites of mine that I could hear covering these well-placed Tom Petty songs that we featured throughout the 10 episodes. Getting the opportunity to A&R each song and build a soundtrack with all of them is a dream.”

Also featured on the soundtrack are the War on Drugs, Sharon Van Etten, Larkin Poe, Kurt Vile, Lissie, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Weezer, Nathaniel Rateliff and Marcus King.
For now, no other details have emerged about who contributed to Vedder’s recording of “Room at the Top,” which he frequently performs at his solo concerts and with his side band Earthlings. He also played it in honor of the late Petty as part of the “In Memoriam” portion of the 2018 Academy Awards ceremony.
In late June, Vedder surprised released a cover of the English Beat’s “Save It for Later” as part of the new season of FX’s The Bear. Meanwhile, Pearl Jam returns to the road on Aug. 22 in Missoula, Mt., in support of their latest album, Dark Matter.
