Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Promo Teases Keanu Reeves as Shadow

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is only four months away, and no trailer has been released, but it appears that Paramount Pictures is about to go into overdrive as the studio has begun teasing Keanu Reeves‘ arrival as Shadow the Hedgehog. In April 2024, it was confirmed that Reeves would be voicing Shadow the Hedgehog, who was first teased in the mid-credits scene of 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Shadow the Hedgehog first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 in 2001 and has since become one of the most iconic characters in the franchise.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3′s official TikTok account has started teasing the film’s upcoming trailer, which is now confirmed to be released tomorrow, August 27, 2024. The first video on the movie’s official TikTok account is a clip of the first Sonic the Hedgehog film from 2020, in which Sonic is watching Point Break and getting excited about Keanu Reeves. The caption reads “foreshadowing” because in just four years, Keanu Reeves will go from being an actor Sonic loves to being the voice of the newest character in the cast. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Finally Ramps Up Marketing

Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s first trailer arrives just four months before it opens in theaters this December. Following the surprise box office success of both Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of the holiday season and could be the big winner. It will open the same week as Mufasa: The Lion King, the Disney prequel to Jon Favreau’s photorealistic animated remake, but Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has the odds stacked in its favor. While 2019’s The Lion King is one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, public perception of the movie was mixed, while other attempts by Disney to make sequels to live-action remakes, like Alice Through the Looking Glass and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, have underperformed. Meanwhile, Sonic the Hedgehog has great goodwill among the audience.

There is also the addition of Keanu Reeves to the film’s main cast. Ever since 2014’s John Wick, Reeves has seen a major career revival. Combine that with his playing the character of Shadow the Hedgehog, a fan-favorite, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is positioned for box-office success. The franchise has already spun off the character of Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba, into a successful Paramount+ series, so the same could happen with Shadow, given the character and Reeves’s popularity. It goes to show how far Sonic the Hedgehog has come since 2020, when Sonic made a joke about Keanu Reeves, and now there is a chance he will recognize that Shadow the Hedgehog sounds like his favorite actor.
