Vince Vaughn was once the torchbearer for rapid-fire, coked-up shenanigans. His high, gravelly laugh is probably ringing in your head right now. But after his run of over-quoted crass comedies of the aughts, Vaughn took a very laudable swing at serious acting roles in the True Detective series, Brawl in Cell Block 99, and Hacksaw Ridge. His latest project, the crime comedy Bad Monkey for Apple TV+ has just been renewed for a second season.

Apple TV+’s Hit Series Wouldn’t Work Without Vince Vaughn
Bad Monkey has become one of the most popular series streaming right now, and that has a lot to do with Vince Vaughn and his portrayal of the lead.
Based on the novel by Carl Hiaasen, Vaughn plays Andrew Yancy – a disgraced cop who becomes a health inspector after being tossed off the Miami Police Department. But after stumbling into a case involving a mysterious severed arm, Yancy sees cracking the murder as his one-way ticket back to the police force. The first season has all the measured quippy coolness that is just Vaughn’s speed and mixes the comedy, action, and crime drama he’s worked in throughout his career.
Bill Lawrence, who co-created Ted Lasso, Scrubs and Shrinking, developed Bad Monkey for Apple TV+ and spoke with Variety about his excitement at the new season:
“I hope that people know that Carl Hiaasen is an idol of mine and an inspiration for me as a writer. To get to go on telling his story with Vince Vaughn and this great cast, at least the characters who are still alive, is very exciting. I’m very thankful to our partners at Apple TV+ and Warner Bros, as well as the entire team that helps bring this show to life.”
The Bill Lawrence Touch
TV show-smith Bill Lawrence has had quite a career over the last 30 years. From writing on Boy Meets World, to creating Scrubs, Spin City, and Cougar Town, his hallmark touches of absurdist yet heartfelt comedy are present in all his shows. His penchant for scrappy, put-upon underdogs makes for winning television, as can be seen in Ted Lasso, Scrubs, and now Bad Monkey. His brand of TV is so bankable that Scrubs is even on the verge of a reboot with Lawrence at the helm. The folks over at Apple TV+ also believe this in Lawrence, as Matt Cherniss (head of programming) issued his vote of confidence in the show:
“Since ‘Bad Monkey’ first made its debut on Apple TV+, this highly entertaining series became an instant fan-favorite. Led by the incomparable Vince Vaughn as Andrew Yancy, alongside a brilliant ensemble cast, we can’t wait for everyone to experience more hilarious, sun-soaked, beachy misadventures from the mind of Bill Lawrence as the temperature rises even further in the next chapter of this engrossing murder-mystery.”
Joining Vaughn in the cast of Bad Monkey are Meredith Hagner, L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat, Michelle Monaghan, Jodie Turner-Smith and Ronald Peet. No release date has been set yet for the new season.
