In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, Wicked director Jon M. Chu gave a hilarious response to a question about the movie’s choreography. In the clip, Chu watches a pre-recorded question from friend and colleague Lin-Manuel Miranda, who playfully shades the director of copying some moves from In the Heights. Referring to the salon sequence in the song “One Short Day,” Miranda calls the nail choreography “suspiciously familiar” to the nail choreography from In the Heights.
Chu laughs at the video comment from Miranda and confirms the scene as an homage, crediting Chris Scott, who was the choreographer for both Wicked and In The Heights. The director elaborates by saying how they like to include “little nods” or references to their past works in new projects. You can watch the interview clip here. Chu continues:
“Yes, we were aware that there are some fun things that are little winks to ourselves, too.
This is, of course, all in good fun, as just seeing Miranda’s face appear on the screen makes the Wicked director smile. The two creators would become friends during the production of 2021’s In The Heights. It’s great to see the friendly banter between the two filmmakers as they promote their new projects. Miranda is featured on the soundtrack for Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, having penned original songs for the film.
Meanwhile, the movie musical adaptation of Wicked has enchanted audiences for several weeks, earning an impressive $114 million in its opening weekend. In another interview, Christopher Scott also responded to Miranda’s questioning, saying:
“I love when you can kind of see a parallel, because Oz is as fantastical as it gets, and that was always our intention with Washington Heights, was to show the beauty in there and make it larger than life as well. And, of course, Lin is going to catch it because he’s sharp, he’s a sharp one… I did both, so I get to copy—it’s all the same, from me.”
Fans Wait Patiently for Wicked Part Two
Wicked: Part 2 is set to premiere in theaters on November 21, 2025. Director Chu revealed his decision to divide Wicked into two films in a post back in April 2022, saying that it was the best way to fully explore the storylines, character arcs, and musical numbers. With part one’s 2 hours and 40 min runtime, it’s easy to see how condensing the musical into a single movie would have been a challenge.
The second movie will be called Wicked: For Good, titled after the iconic song in the original show’s second act, and picks up where part one concluded. Filming is already complete, having shot back-to-back with part one, and the entire cast will reprise their roles. The next film is confirmed to have two new original songs. Co-star Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) revealed that she co-wrote one of them with composer Stephen Schwartz.
