Dark Match Trailer Unleashes Gory Pro-Wrestling Horror Movie

Here on Bloody Disgusting we’ve published multiple articles (find them all here) covering *our* favorite horror movies of last year, but it’s always interesting to take a look at year-in-review roundups from other places as well. Letterboxd, for example, kicks off each new year by spotlighting the previous year’s top hits, and their full 2024 Year in Review is now live.

As always, films are broken up into various categories based on highest user ratings, including the 10 Highest Rated Horror Movies of 2024. That list is unsurprisingly topped by Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, which just barely became a 2024 release when it was unleashed in theaters on Christmas Day. Other films, well, you might be surprised to see them make the list.

Here are Letterboxd’s 10 Highest Rated Horror Movies of 2024:

    • 1) Nosferatu
    • 2) The Substance
    • 3) Dead Talents Society
    • 4) Bramayugam
    • 5) Chime
    • 6) Alien: Romulus
    • 7) Exhuma
    • 8) I Saw the TV Glow
    • 9) Your Monster
    • 10) Strange Darling

If a few of these titles don’t sound familiar to you, here’s why. Dead Talents Society is a Taiwanese horror-comedy that had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, but hasn’t actually been widely released here in the United States. Our own Joe Lipsett gave the film 4.5 stars in his review for Bloody Disgusting, which you can read here.

Bramayugam is an Indian Malayalam-language movie, which similarly hasn’t been released in the States, while Chime is a 45-minute movie from Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Pulse, Cure). The catch with that one? As the website Polygon explained earlier this year, “It’s terrifying, beautifully made, and one of the highlights of 2024 so far, no matter the genre. The only problem is that most people don’t know the movie exists, or don’t know they can watch it, because it’s only available through a somewhat complicated, NFT-inflected process.”

Both Alien: Romulus and The Substance also made the list of the 10 Highest Rated Sci-Fi Movies, with The Substance coming in the #2 spot behind Dune: Part Two and Alien: Romulus finding itself in the #5 spot. Netflix’s It’s What’s Inside came in at #9 on that same list, while Max’s M. Night Shyamalan-produced Caddo Lake was the tenth movie on the sci-fi list.

There’s also a “Most Popular Overall” list, with Coralie Fargeat’s Golden Globe-winning The Substance ranking #3, Longlegs in the #6 spot, and Alien: Romulus taking the #8 spot.
