Despite the last film in the series being released in 1990, Back to the Future has had impressive staying power in the realm of pop culture. The trilogy of films directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg is incredibly memorable and filled with a mix of nostalgia and innovation in sci-fi storytelling – as well as some eerie similarities to a certain current world leader. Moreover, the talent and chemistry of the actors at the center of the movies, Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox, is incredible and can still be felt today whenever they reunite for various events.
It only makes sense that fans have talked about wanting some sort of Back to the Future continuation in this new age of revivals, legacy sequels, and reboots. However, screenwriter Bob Gale (who co-wrote the films with Zemeckis) and other creatives involved with the trilogy have reiterated time and again that a sequel or reboot would never happen. Thankfully, Gale provided some interesting news about a different kind of Back to the Future content, as he would tell Cleveland.com about a video game currently in the works:
“We’ve got a shot at a new video game based on Back to the Future. I don’t want to tell you any more than that because I’m not allowed to, but this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Knock on wood that it will happen. Of course, 2025 is the 40th anniversary of the original movie. We’re planning on some events, plus there’s a documentary that’s in post-production now about the making of the musical.”
This Won’t Be the First ‘Back to the Future’ Video Game
Back to the Future has had plenty of video games released as promotional tie-ins for the films and available on retro consoles such as the NES, Atari, and Super Famicom. In more recent memory, Back to the Future received an interesting continuation in the form of a TellTale narrative series game set after the events of the third film in the trilogy. Featuring Christopher Lloyd as the voice of Doc Brown, and even Michael J. Fox voicing a surprise character, the game tells an engaging narrative about learning to live in the present.
With the 40th anniversary of the films now fast approaching, it will be interesting to see how the video game that’s currently in development shapes out. Gale’s secrecy could mean that the upcoming game could be a continuation to the trilogy, much like TellTale’s game did, but it is too early at this point to know for sure. Whatever the case, Gale’s quote stating that it’s something he’s wanted to do for a long time makes this new Back to the Future content exciting.

And it’s not the one you’re thinking.
Video game technology has made huge strides in development since the last game based on the movie came out, meaning the play style, graphics, and story could be next level if handled by the correct studio. Other adaptations, such as Bethesda Games’ recent release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, have shown the potential for video game continuations. Something that keeps in the spirit of the Back to the Future films with innovative gameplay could truly be something special.
