Michael Mann Shares Sequel’s Current Status

Oscar nominee Michael Mann has offered a brand new Heat 2 update, teasing the current progress of his long-in-development sequel. The original 1995 crime drama movie was led by acclaimed actors Al Pacino as Lt. Vincent Hanna and Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley.

What was Michael Mann’s Heat 2 update?

In a recent interview, Mann confirmed that he has finished writing the screenplay for Heat 2, revealing that the first draft is already with Warner Bros. At the moment, the studio hasn’t officially greenlit the project, which will be based on Mann’s 2022 novel of the same name.

“I just finished the screenplay and handed in the first draft,” he said. “In this case it was Warner Brothers. Any more than that, I can’t talk about. But it’s an exciting project.”

Mann has been developing the sequel since 2023. Described as both a prequel and sequel, it features stories that occur in both 1989 and 2002. It currently has no official cast yet, but Academy Award nominees Adam Driver and Austin Butler were previously rumored to be in negotiations to take over the leading roles of a young Neil McCauley and a young Vincent Hanna. Prior to this, Pacino also previously suggested Timothée Chalamet as the perfect actor who could portray his character in the sequel.

Heat also starred Val Kilmer, Natalie Portman, Diane Venora, Tom Sizemore, Hank Azaria, Ashley Judd, Danny Trejo, and more. The 1995 film was Pacino and De Niro’s first-ever on-screen appearance together after they both starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s acclaimed sequel The Godfather Part II in 1974.
