Netflix’s ‘The OA’ Gets Surprise Season 3 Update From Jason Isaacs

The OA, the sci-fi mystery by Netflix, is one of the streamer’s signature genre shows, even if it hasn’t been in the spotlight lately. Created by Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, the latter of whom also plays the lead, The OA was a bit polarizing with audiences upon release, but the critical reception was always good. Season 2 was very well-received too, but it surprisingly got canceled months after the premiere. Since 2019, fans have been pleading for its return, and now star Jason Isaacs has offered a promising update that will give fans something to be excited about.

“We will not let it go,” Isaacs said about The OA when talking to Jo Whiley on her podcast. As reported by Comic Book, Isaacs appeared on the podcast and addressed the Netflix fan-favorite released in 2016. Isaacs plays Hap (or Dr. Percy, depending on which dimension you stand) in the show, which also features actors like Emory Cohen, Phyllis Smith, Brandon Perea, Paz Vega, Scott Wilson, and others.

Just as thriller movies need to keep you engaged, so do thriller TV shows, and Netflix is streaming some of the best.

According to Isaacs, fans are not the only ones who keep pushing for the return of the thriller series. Whiley tells Isaacs that The OA is one of her favorite projects the actor has been involved in. He agrees with her, saying that the showrunners are some of the most creative people he has ever worked with. Isaacs also teased that they’re not finished telling the story of Prairie/Nina:

“Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, who wrote it and Brit starred in it, are two of the most free-spirited, creative people I’ve ever met. They’d only made little independent movies before, which were all beautiful as I’ve seen, and then, suddenly, they had the grown-ups budget, a whole television series. And they wrote that thing on spec. Other people’s fingers weren’t in the pie. It was so unique and so human.

“And by the way, we haven’t finished with it. That story cannot end there. Zal and Brit and I had dinner last week in Los Angeles, and there’s no chance for letting it go. That’s all I can say. Not because I’m keeping secrets from you, but because we will not let it go.”

The plot synopsis of The OA reads as follows: ‘Created and written by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, this Netflix original delves into the inexplicable reappearance of Prairie Johnson. Having gone missing seven years ago, the previously blind Johnson returns home, now in her late 20s and with her sight restored. While many believe she is a miracle, others worry that she could be dangerous.”

‘The OA’s Cult Following Is One of the Strongest for a Netflix Series

Throughout the years, The OA has developed a cult following that has stayed strong for almost a decade. The cliffhanger at the end of Season 2 hinted at Batmanglij and Marling’s ambition to tell the whole story in a multi-season run. Naturally, fans were very disappointed when they found out that the cryptic conclusion was never going to be explained. However, this seems to have made the series’ cult following much stronger over the years.

The OA is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with Season 1 boasting a Tomatometer score of 76% (critics) and a Popcornmeter score of 78% (audience). On the other hand, Season 2 registers higher scores, with 92% for the Tomatometer, and 88% for the Popcornmeter.
