Bugonia marked yet another collaboration between Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos, as the actress stepped into the shoes of CEO Michelle Fueller, a powerful woman with possible extra-terrestrial connections. Besides her incredible acting, she also did something extraordinary for this film. Emma Stone shaved her head for the role, but she had one condition for doing this.
Emma Stone reveals what condition she had for shaving her head in Bugonia
The Academy Award winner is known for immersing very deeply into her roles, and Bugonia was no different for her. Playing the character with charm and conviction, she once again leaned into embodying her character to the maximum extent, even shaving her head in the process.
But now, Emma Stone has revealed to PEOPLE that she put forward one condition for shaving her head to director Yorgos Lanthimos: he had to shave his head too. “When I knew we were gonna do this … I said to Yorgos, ‘We’re gonna have to shave your head too so that we’re in solidarity.’ And he’s like, ‘Okay,’” she shared in a behind-the-scenes video.
In the video, the La La Land star can be seen shaving Lanthimos herself. “It was exciting,” she said, “but it wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be to shave his head. It was cool. But it felt more dramatic, my shave. I don’t mean to brag, but my hair was pretty long, and his was not.”
Notably, the hair and makeup team of Bugonia had to reportedly shave Emma Stone’s head every three days or so during the filming process to achieve continuity. Her being bald is a major part of the film’s storyline, and she pulled off the look with great conviction.
Meanwhile, Bugonia also received great critical acclaim and is now available on digital platforms for purchase and rent. The film additionally stars Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone.
