A24’s Chiwetel Ejiofor Horror Movie Backrooms Gets Poster, Release Date

A24 has announced the release date for Backrooms, the upcoming supernatural sci-fi horror movie. It is based on YouTuber and up-and-coming filmmaker Kane Parsons’ anthological web series, which has already garnered nearly 100 million combined views. The acclaimed studio has also shared the first poster for the film, featuring a familiar greenish wallpaper.

When is the release date for A24’s Backrooms movie?

Backrooms is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 29, 2026, pitting it directly against another highly anticipated horror movie, Passenger, at the box office. The film will also debut in the same month as other high-profile movies such as The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Sheep Detectives, Mortal Kombat II, Obsession, and The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The supernatural movie serves as Parsons’s feature directorial debut, which was written by Roberto Patino and Will Soodik. The cast will be led by Academy Award nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor (2012, Doctor Strange) and Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value). Joining them are Mark Duplass (The Morning Show), Finn Bennett (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Lukita Maxwell, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap), Chelah Horsdal (Hell on Wheels), Toby Hargrave (Superman & Lois), and more.

The film is executive-produced by Michael Clear, Jenni DePiero, Alayna Glasthal, Patino, Jesse Savath, Judson Scott, and Chris White. Kori Adelson, Dan Levine, The Conjuring creator James Wan are also serving as producers, along with Stranger Things producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. The creative team consists of cinematographer Jeremy Cox, production designer Danny Vermette, set decorator Trevor Johnston, and Costume Designer. It is a production by A24, Chernin Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and 21 Laps.
