Strange New Worlds EPs Are Excited About Risky S4 Episode

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to include a risky and most experimental episode yet. Season 4 is upping the ante after dipping its toes into the musical genre and a fully animated episode. One of Season 4’s episodes will feature Captain Christopher Pike as a puppet, created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 producers call puppet episode a ‘delight’

In an interview with Polygon, series showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman expressed their excitement for the particular episode. The puppet episode was teased last year with a glimpse of a puppet version of Captain Pike in the USS Enterprise’s control room.

“It is more work than any episode that we have done,” Kurtzman said. “It’s more work than the animated one. It’s more work than the musical. It’s more work than a giant VFX episode. It’s a lot of prep. It’s a lot of work on the day. It’s a lot of post.”

The trade notes that despite it being a difficult episode, the showrunners called it “a delight” to work on. They noted that the puppeteers at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop were also fans of the franchise.

“If you go to work on Star Trek, the odds are it’s one of your favorite things,” said Goldsman. “You don’t stumble into Star Trek. You race to Star Trek. That’s been so true for so many folks that we’ve gotten a chance to work with, and boy was it true for the folks who were the puppeteers. It was moving and profound.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is well known for genre-hopping, but the puppet episode looks set to raise the bar entirely. As for how Captain Pike turns into a felt puppet, the producers blamed “an unexpected and terrible transporter accident” in the episode. Jordan Canning will direct the special episode.

The fourth season will be more episodic, with no overarching villain. The series, which acts as a prequel to the original Star Trek series, will eventually lead to Pike handing the baton to Captain Kirk. That final season will include six episodes and is expected to be released relatively soon. The final two seasons are more akin to being a singular unit, with certain characters like Una exploring new horizons.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds streams on Paramount+. Season 4 will premiere on July 23, 2026.
