Charli xcx’s ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ Coming In July

Charli xcx’s new album has been christened Music, Fashion, Film and will be released July 24 through Atlantic. Its cover is a black and white photo by longtime collaborator Aidan Zamiri featuring the Velvet Underground’s John Cale, fashion designer Marc Jacobs and director Martin Scorsese, apparently intended to represent each aspect of the title.

“11 songs, 30 minutes, 5 seconds,” the artist wrote on Instagram about the project, which has been led by the singles “Rock Music” and “SS26.” It arrives after Charli sparked debate in a spring British Vogue cover story by declaring, “I think the dancefloor is dead, so now we’re making rock music.” She later clarified the comment in a teasing Instagram caption: “a video of me making a song called ‘rock music’ that is not actually rock music which is funny because i never said i was making a rock album. love you xx”

The new album title is taken from an “SS26” lyric, which proclaims, “we’re walkin’ on a runway that goes straight to hell / nothing’s gonna save us, not music, fashion or film.” As for the presence of the 84-year-old Cale, the two worked together last year on Charli’s Wuthering Heights soundtrack.

Music, Fashion, Film continues a prolific stretch for Charli following the seemingly endless afterlife of her album BRAT. In the past year, she’s moved heavily into film acting while also contributing music to the pop star-centric Mother Mary.

She’ll presumably show off some new rock moves during a handful of summer festival appearances, which include Lollapalooza in Chicago, Outside Lands in San Francisco and the U.K.’s Reading and Leeds festivals in August.
