American Gangster is leaving Netflix next month
According to What’s on Netflix, American Gangster leaves Netflix on August 1, 2026. Netflix is removing the crime drama after its licensing deal expires. The film will no longer be available on the platform and subscribers have limited time left to watch it.
The movie is directed by Ridley Scott and was released in November 2007. Steven Zaillian wrote the screenplay for the acclaimed crime drama. Denzel Washington plays notorious drug kingpin Frank Lucas.
The story follows Frank Lucas building a heroin empire nationwide. He imports drugs directly from overseas suppliers for profits. Frank sells them under the famous “Blue Magic” name. Soon, he becomes Harlem’s most powerful crime boss around.
Meanwhile, Richie Roberts, played by Russell Crowe, begins investigating Lucas’s growing criminal operation carefully. He leads a special police task force against him. Eventually, police arrest Frank Lucas and several family members too. However, Frank later helps expose dozens of corrupt police officers.
His cooperation leads to many arrests across New York eventually. The film is loosely based on the life of Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas. It blends crime, drama, and true-story elements. The acclaimed crime drama still remains a fan-favorite today.
It still holds an 81% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences liked it even more with a 91% score. According to Box Office Mojo, the crime drama earned $269.7 million at the worldwide box office. Its production budget was around $100 million overall.
