Dear readers, No surprise that I love films or streaming shows about writers and the writing life and these past few weeks I binged My Brilliant Career on Netflix. Set in beautiful rural Australia in the year 1900, this miniseries tells the story of a powerful young woman who dreams of making a career as a writer. As she navigates society’s expectations of women for the time, she wrestles with the question of whether her writing dreams can coexist with domesticity and marriage.
Once I finished all six episodes, however, I was at a loss for what other media I should turn to while unwinding in the evenings. What new story would catch my interest?
The answer, it turns out, was on the list of this week’s new book releases. Bestselling author Ariel Lawhon’s new book, The Pirate Queen, just hit shelves this past Tuesday, and turns out it’s the perfect antidote to a period drama-induced hangover. This sweeping novel shares all my favorite traits of My Brilliant Career — a rich historical setting and a strong female protagonist — while introducing me to a brand-new story following Grace O’Malley, the legendary sea captain of 16th-century Ireland.
