Paul Thomas Anderson’s New Movie Is Getting Even Better Reviews Than One Battle After Another

Paul Thomas Anderson has a new movie coming out soon after his latest hit, One Battle After Another. While the movie is a bit of a departure, it’s drawing rave reviews, as most of his projects do.

Paul Thomas Anderson is known for a number of hits across his career. Now, he’s ready to tackle the world of music for a moment. Anderson directed the upcoming concert film Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall, a 75-minute film.

Winter’s live album is set to release on October 9, and the movie accompanying the performance will release next month, on November 20. Ahead of it, the movie is getting a ton of praise, with TheWrap’s Zachary Lee noting “with this project, Anderson, his collaborators, and Winter have made a work — clearly born out of love — that cannot fit in any one hand. We, as the audience, are invited to grasp at what they have made.”

Variety’s Owen Gleiberman had more praise for the music than the movie, noting “the movie might have been a touch lugubrious were it not for that voice of Winter’s, which is a miraculous instrument: indie in a low-slung operatic way. In “Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall,” he’s possessed by the music he’s singing, so lost in it that you hope he’s never found.”

IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio called the movie a “hynoptic, a concert film up there with Stop Making Sense but for introverts.”

What is Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie about?

Cameron Winter Live at Carnegie Hall is a movie that, like its name suggests, focuses on a performance of Winter’s at Carnegie Hall. The set was filmed in December 2025, at the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall.

The performance features solo piano renditions of tracks from Winter’s 2024 solo album Heavy Metal, alongside some previously unreleased work. Winter is the frontman of the rock band Geese, which formed in 2016 and has recently risen to superstardom over the past few years.
