There are a few iconic images from the college-admission scandal, a tale of uncapped privilege in which a handful of wealthy parents absolutely paid for their children to play in an already unequal system. There was Lori Loughlin, mother of two girls who got into the University of Southern California via the crew program despite not participating in the sport, smiling and waving gamely to paparazzi as she entered the Boston courthouse as if running a day’s errand.
Later, there was her hat, a large, round thing that shielded her from both the California sun and camera lenses, as if announcing to the world she had accepted the seriousness of her situation, and did not want the world to see her like this. It was the “crime hat,” and it was large.
And then there was Mossimo Giannulli, who in all the evidence presented seemed to be the family-scheme’s driver and who got more time than this wife. He grew a beard and went power bald right in time for prison. In the weeks leading up to to the start of his sentence serving, he took his new beard for a spin around the links.
Now the pair are at a resort in Mexico. How, you ask? Aren’t these people just out of prison on probation or something? Yes, most everyone probably needs some R & R after prison! But not everyone gets it. Loughlin and Giannulli recently asked a judge if they could take a vacation. The judge said yes and they flew out recently.
And then of course, the photographers followed, the fruits of their labor hitting Page Six on Tuesday. See now Loughlin with her feet near the pool, smiling and holding binoculars, and…pointing to the camera and laughing. The look is very, “can’t touch this now.” Girls just want to have fun. It’s a lot like those initial photos that emerged of her smiling at the cameras on court-appearance day, signing autographs, but here she is on the other side of it all. And her hat? More enormous than ever.
Mossimo, meanwhile, is as bald and beardy as the day he went to prison. The jailhouse haircut and pandemic beard have carried forth into his new life, here on the other side of it all. And yes, he is back on the links. Same as it ever was.
