The 2024 Olympics opening ceremony has been a hotly debated topic on the internet over the last 24 hours or so. Today anchor Savannah Guthrie was admittedly left “hot and bothered” by one specific portion of the ceremonies. Keep reading to see what had her so flustered.
Savannah Guthrie ‘Hot & Bothered’ After Opening Ceremony
“We are transitioning from the liberty portion, which got us a little hot and bothered in the pouring rain,” Savannah Guthrie said. The Today co-host was referring to a three-person romance that was featured in the “Liberty” section of the opening ceremony “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” skit.
The skit followed two men and one woman dancer who all seemed to meet up in a library. Before running up a spiral staircase, the “Le Triomphe De L’Amour” book cover was shown on screen. Then, the female dancer appeared to tease both men by almost kissing them.
The threesome began touching each other, but before things got too graphic, they pushed the camera out of the room, shutting the door behind them.
Savannah Guthrie wasn’t the only person who felt “hot and bothered” about the steamy trio. Kelly Clarkson, who is also in Paris as an NBC commentator, said, “We are uninvited, well, OK. That was just rude.”
Mike Tirico, who is also in Paris with NBC, explained the significance of the skit. “So the artistic director, Thomas Jolly, decided to lean into some of the clichés about France,” he shared with viewers. “The City of Light, known as a romantic city. So much literature written or set here involves love.”
He continued, “So in this segment, love and literature the twain shall meet. Or maybe we should say trois.”
Social Media Reacts To Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony
Social media has lost its mind over several things in the opening ceremony for the 2024 Olympics.
“I didn’t have the Olympics opening ceremony celebrating polyamory among their celebration of love, but I’m here for it,” one viewer wrote on X. Another commented, “LOL the ménage à trois on live TV! On the Olympics opening ceremony! Okay Paris!”
Yet another person commented, begging for more of the “throuple.” They wrote, “If this Opening Ceremony throuple is not brought back for the Closing Ceremony, what has this all been for? Show them again, I’m too invested, open that apartment door back up!”
The opening ceremony for the games also featured a number of other performances, including Lady Gaga and a surprising appearance from Celine Dion. Celine closed out the night’s performances by singing “L’Hymne à l’amour.” She looked strong as she stood at the base of the Eiffel Tower and belted out the lyrics.
This was the first performance Celine Dion has made since she shared her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis with the public in December 2022.
