This year has been a great one for Netflix
and action, with the likes of Rebel Ridge, The Shadow Strays, and Under Paris lighting up both the Rotten Tomatoes
ratings and the viewership numbers. So, as we approach the end of 2024, how does their latest action thriller effort, the Taron Egerton-le, Christmas-set Carry-On
, fare with critics? As of now, Carry-On stands at a promising 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, and could very well be exaclty what action movie fans asked for this year.
Nick Schager of The Daily Beast declared Carry-On to be nothing less than “the Best Netflix Thriller in Years,” as well as the perfect gift for action movie fans.
“This breakneck Netflix offering confirms the enduring vitality of its chosen formula—and, in the process, proves an unexpected and welcome Yuletide streaming gift.”
Jake Cole of Slant Magazine applauded director Jaume Collet-Serra’s action movie throwback, saying, “The film is another showcase of Jaume Collet-Serra’s refreshingly old-school grasp of thriller mechanics.” While William Bibbiani of TheWrap praised the festive action outing, saying, “There are about two minutes in Carry-On that are as exciting as any other action movie this year, and about 100 minutes that are pretty fun too.”
Nate Richard of Collider, meanwhile, was quickly enamored by the “escapist fun” of Carry-On, which promises to be the ideal viewing experience this holiday season.
“Carry-On is pure escapist fare that you can turn on while sitting next to your Christmas tree, and it has enough energy that you won’t feel the need to check your phone every 10 minutes.”
‘Carry-On’ Finds Taron Egerton as a TSA Agent in an Impossible Situation
Sadly, it’s not all good news. M.N. Miller of FandomWire gave the movie just 4/10, saying, “Carry On feels as if the studio said to themselves, “Let’s make a movie that answers the question, Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?” The script thinks it’s smarter than it is, dragging down a fun performance by Jason Bateman, who’s in full snark cannon mode.” Brian Orndorf of Blu-ray.com felt similarly, adding, “Carry-On starts off with promise, getting about an hour’s worth of suspense and escalation in before it goes bananas, and not in a fun way.”
But, ’tis the season to end on a positive, and so we shall, as Ema Sasic of Next Best Picture heaped praise on the performances from both Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, calling Carry-On “a total trip to watch.”
“It’s a wild ride from start to finish, borderline campy in some respects, and has excellent performances from Egerton and Bateman. Does it get so absurd that it’s hilarious and a total trip to watch? Absolutely, and you love to see it.”
