‘Succession‘ Will End with Season 4

Since season 3 of Succession bowed in December 2021, we’ve been eager to learn about the future of the critically adored HBO drama. And how could we not, after a bombshell ending like that? If you need a (spoiler-filled) refresher, siblings Kendall, Roman, and Shiv Roy finally banded together to stop their father Logan from selling Waystar-Royco to the streaming service GoJo, but their plan failed—partly because of a gutting betrayal by Shiv’s husband, Tom Wambsgans.

With Tom as a surprising underdog and the Roy kids licking their wounds (once again), where could Succession go in season 4? Here’s what we know.

Is Succession season 4 confirmed?

HBO renewed Succession for a fourth season about a week after season 3 premiered. At the time, network execs voiced their confidence in the hit drama.

“With each season of Succession, [creator] Jesse Armstrong has continued to surpass our wildest expectations, pulling us deeper into the Roy family’s inner sanctum with indelible wit, humanity, and precision,” Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, said in a statement. “This season is undoubtedly no exception, and we couldn’t be more excited for all that’s in store in this next season ahead.”

When does season 4 come out?

Succession returns on Sunday, March 26 (9-10 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. There will be 10 episodes in the fourth season, each arriving weekly.

Is there a trailer?

The first teaser shared by HBO shows the Roy siblings united as a “rebel alliance” while their father Logan is still standing “a hundred feet tall.” Plus, we get a glimpse of Tom and Shiv addressing his bombshell move in the season 3 finale. “Do you want to talk about what happened?” he asks her, nearly cowering. She puts her hand on her hip and scowls. Yikes!

Another teaser arrived on January 26, showing where the Roys stand with their father. (Hint: it’s not going well.) They can’t even get on the phone with him; but his assistant Kerry offers to have Logan text a request for a call.

Meanwhile, Tom is awkwardly settling into his alliance with Logan but still concerned about his marriage to Shiv. What if their relationship implodes because of their conflicting allegiances in this familial war? Logan offers little comfort. “If we’re good, we’re good,” he tells his son-in-law. “That’s heartening. I’m heartened by that,” Tom says with a nervous laugh.

In the, Gerri warns the Roy kids, “You cannot win. Your dad will wash you away.”

What will it be about?

HBO shared an official synopsis for the upcoming 10 episodes, which will follow the Roy family facing “existential angst and familial division” as the GoJo deal approaches. (Lovely. What else are we here for?)

“In the ten-episode season four, the sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson moves ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is completed. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed.”

In an August 2022 interview with the podcast 20 Questions on Deadline, Kieran Culkin described the feel of Succession season 4. He explained that while the first episode feels like “the show again,” the next couple of episodes “actually kind of [feel] different,” per Screen Rant. “Which is great,” Culkin continued. “It’s like it’s a great different. It’s like not resting on its laurels or whatever. It’s still very much the show, but it feels like it’s going in a direction that I did not anticipate.”

On NBC’s red carpet broadcast at the Emmy Awards, Sarah Snook teased what fans can expect from the fourth season: “More drama. What else can the Roys provide?” And “super-high stakes.”

The story will pick up soon after the events of the finale, which ended with Tom’s betrayal of Shiv and her brothers. “We pick up a little bit of time after the dust has sort of settled. Not very much though,” Matthew Macfadyen revealed backstage at the Emmys after being named best supporting actor in a drama.

There will also be some scenes filmed overseas, as Armstrong confirmed that “we’re obviously shooting abroad, we’re working on a broad canvas, I won’t get into what we’re going to do.” He didn’t address rumors of shooting in Norway, though.

Production appears to be right on schedule. Brian Cox previously told GQ UK that it was “roughly the plan” to start shooting in June 2022, after the writers were slated to reconvene in January.

Armstrong had also told Variety on May 8 that the writing stage was almost complete. “We’re almost done with the writing for season 4, here in London, with the American writers coming over,” he told the outlet. “They’re a really great group of people to talk about the nuances of character and the world and what we’re doing on the show.”

Macfadyen gave a quick update on the schedule in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published January 16. “We’ve got another month or so” left of filming, he said.

Will there be more seasons after this one?

No, the fourth season will be Succession‘s last. Armstrong announced the news in a February 23 interview with The New Yorker, which ran about a month before the season 4 premiere.

“You know, there’s a promise in the title of ‘Succession,’” he said. “I’ve never thought this could go on forever. The end has always been kind of present in my mind. From Season 2, I’ve been trying to think: Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that? I went into the writing room for Season 4 sort of saying, ‘I think this is what we’re doing, but let’s also keep it open.’ I like operating the writing room by coming in with a sort of proposition, and then being genuinely open to alternative ways of going. And the decision to end solidified through the writing and even when we started filming: I said to the cast, “I’m not a hundred per cent sure, but I think this is it.” Because I didn’t want to bullshit them, either.”

Days before that interview broke, Jeremy Strong told GQ what it would be like to say goodbye to Kendall Roy for good: “It will feel like a death, in a way.”
