Stronger together! From middle school sweethearts to married MTV stars, Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra are committed to making their relationship work.
After more than a decade together, the couple has overcome many ups and downs, including breakups, makeups, living apart and becoming parents.
After meeting in the 7th grade, the pair began dating in 2005. Their journey to parenthood was documented on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant in 2009, when Lowell gave birth to their daughter Carly. The pair placed Carly up for adoption, and despite how hard the decision was for them they have remained bonded.
Baltierra proposed to his love two times, once in high school in 2010 and again in 2013, after briefly calling off their first engagement. Two years later, the lovebirds welcomed their second child together, daughter Novalee, in January 2015. Seven months later, they tied the knot after dating on and off for 10 years.
“I was bawling like a baby,” Baltierra exclusively told Us Weekly after the August 2015 nuptials. The duo faced breakup rumors three years later, but Lowell denied a split was in their future, telling Us in May 2018, “Couples go through ups and downs. We are a solid couple.”

Middle School Sweethearts
Lowell and Baltierra started dating in 2005 after they met in 7th grade. Not long after they got together, Lowell’s mother, April, and Baltierra’s father, Butch, also started a relationship and wed in 2009. (They divorced in 2013.)
“Throw backs of @tylerbaltierramtv and I. It’s so funny to look back at us !” she wrote in April 2018 alongside Instagram photos of the pair when they first started dating. “I was OBSESSED with that Hollister coat and he’s stilll the love of my life!!!! ️ Tyler looks sooo little! My pink eye shadow I loved!!! I actually miss that stuff lol .”

Enter MTV
MTV cameras started to capture Lowell’s and Baltierra’s journey on season 1 of 16 and Pregnant in 2009, a few months before they welcomed their first daughter together, Carly, in May 2009. At only 16 years old, the duo made the difficult decision to place Carly for an open adoption, and picked a couple named Brandon and Teresa to raise their baby girl.

First Proposal
Baltierra popped the question for the first time when the pair were still in high school during episode of Teen Mom season 1 that aired in January 2010. Lowell said yes, but their relationship bliss was short-lived.

Infidelity
When Teen Mom returned for season 2 in July 2010, Baltierra found out in the premiere episode that Lowell lied to him about hooking up with her ex during a brief break from their relationship. The pair got back together shortly after.

Visits With Carly
During Teen Mom’s original run, fans saw Lowell and Baltierra struggle with their open adoption and look forward to visits with Carly, Brandon and Teresa. (Teen Mom ended after four seasons in 2012, but returned as Teen Mom OG in 2015.)

Called Off Engagement
Baltierra called off their engagement during a July 2013 episode of VH1’s Couples Therapy. “I feel like once we’re married, I’m going to be stuck in this rut forever,” he told one of the therapists on the series at the time. “The more I think about it, the more it’s like she de-motivates me. She’s not motivated to do things herself. She’s not independent. She’d probably never admit it, but I feel like sometimes she puts up with me.”

Second Proposal
Months later, the pair got engaged for a second time and fans saw Baltierra propose during an MTV special titled Being Lowell, which aired in February 2014. He also got her a new engagement ring for Christmas that year. “Babe got me a new engagement ring…. I wasn’t expecting this at all… it even has a baby diamond on the bottom to represent our new little girl….,” she wrote in December 2014 on Instagram. “thank you so much @tylerbaltierramtv I love you!”

Tying the Knot
After a decade together, the duo wed in August 2015 at the Castle Farms venue in Michigan in front of 154 guests, including Teen Mom OG costars Maci Bookout and Amber Portwood and Teen Mom 2’s Kailyn Lowry and Javi Marroquin. “I was bawling like a baby,” Baltierra told Us exclusively at the time about watching his wife walk down the aisle. The pair also wrote their own vows; Lowell told Us that she thought his vows were “so heartfelt and emotional.”

Postpartum Depression
After giving birth to Nova in 2015, Lowell suffered from postpartum depression and sought treatment in Arizona. Her struggle was documented on Teen Mom OG, and the couple opened up about how it affected her relationship during a November 2016 episode of The Doctors. “It affected [our marriage] as far as our communication goes,” Baltierra said at the time. “For the first time, we didn’t know how to communicate because we never went through it before and we didn’t know anything about postpartum. It’s definitely created a little bit of tension.”

In Sickness and In Health
Lowell sought treatment for her mental health and trauma struggles in November 2017 after having suicidal thoughts. After coming home one month later, she returned to rehab in January 2018 and later revealed on an episode of Teen Mom OG that she suffered a miscarriage.
“I’m taking the time I need right now to take good care of myself…,” Lowell said in an exclusive statement to Us Weekly in November 2017. “On November 17th I thought of every way possible to commit suicide… from wrapping a belt around my neck to just running my car into an electric pole… THANK GOD I have a support system and a HUSBAND and a DAUGHTER… thank god I am self aware… I’m seeking treatment and I WILL get better… anyone feeling alone you ARE NOT ALONE! This world needs all of us! We are all here for a reason… Thank you for your support during this tough time…. Much Love, Catelynn Baltierra.”
“I love you so much!!!” she wrote alongside a photo of herself and Baltierra a month after she finished in treatment in March 2018. “And for all you haters vows say – in SICKNESS and in health… remember that… because this man has done that for me beyond what I could imagine ️ @tylerbaltierramtv #KeepTalkingMH#rememberURVows.”

Fighting the Rumors
After reports surfaced that the couple were having issues in May 2018 because she changed her last name on social media. Lowell denied the split rumors in a statement to Us Weekly: “Tyler and I are not getting a divorce. Couples go through ups and downs. That’s normal life. We are a solid couple that will work through anything life throws at us.”

Always There for Each Other
During an appearance on the Dr. Oz Show in July 2018, Lowell revealed how she handled her husband’s alarming tweet in April of that year when he wrote he felt “so alone” despite being surrounded by his wife and their daughter, Nova. “I read it on Twitter and instantly my first reaction goes to my trauma of like, ‘What did I do?’ Then, I was like no. I talk to myself, that’s my trauma stuff,” she answered. “And then I’m automatically like it has nothing to do with you, just go in there and ask, “Is there anything I can do for you? Is there anything you need?’”

Their Family Is Growing!
The couple revealed exclusively to Us Weekly in September 2018 that Lowell was pregnant and expecting their third child together. “It was a huge shock at first. We were not planning it, especially after the miscarriage and how I went downhill with my mental illness,” she told Us. “We were going to wait a really long time. We were using protection and everything and still got pregnant! This baby just wanted to be here. It was very unexpected.”

Rough Patches
The couple decided to spend a month living apart amid finding out they were expecting, a decision Baltierra came to during a November 2018 episode of Teen Mom OG. “We’ve been together so long that it’s like ‘Who are you as a person by yourself?” Lowell said, agreeing. However, they did not call it a break up and are not seeing other people.

Stronger Together
Shortly after announcing their trial separation, Baltierra and Lowell professed their love for each other on Instagram. “I love you @tylerbaltierramtv you are seriously AMAZING,” she commented on one of her husband’s posts in December 2018, to which he replied, “I love you too babe and regardless of what anyone says, just remember….You are BEAUTIFUL. You are STRONG. You are WORTHY. You are SAFE!”

Sweet Reunion
The twosome saw their eldest daughter, Carly, in October 2021 for the first time in two years amid the coronavirus pandemic. “[MTV] didn’t film Carly herself or anything like that, but they always film us,” Lowell told E! News at the time. “People will be able to witness what our reaction was from the first day to the last day, from leaving and even just, like, the start of the visit and things like that, which I think is definitely important.”

Mini Saviors
Baltierra explained in November 2021 how having children with Lowell pushed the couple into going to therapy and become stronger people as their family lives were “insane” before getting pregnant. “We actually were thankful because it kind of helped … get this thing in check that we kind of ignored for a while,” he said during an appearance on the “Reality Life With Kate Casey” podcast. “So we really feel like, in a way, our children just saved us. They came to us exactly at the right time when they were supposed to be in our lives and helped project the healing.”

November 2022
In an episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, the couple sat down with Nova to explain the story behind Carly’s adoption.
“It feels like that’s my sister and I can’t see her that much,” Nova told her parents in the episode about missing her biological sister. “Imagine getting split up from your sister or your brother.”
Catelynn explained to her daughter that she and Tyler chose to place Carly for adoption because they were just teenagers at the time. “That is not a grown up,” a surprised Nova replied.
“When mommy found out she was pregnant, me and daddy talked and we said we can’t raise a baby right now,” Catelynn told their daughter. “We didn’t have cars. We were still in school, no jobs.”
