May we offer you an egg in this trying time?

eggs

Sure, Easter is all about resurrections and bunnies, but that leaves out the best part: Easter eggs. Whether they’re full of candy or serve as a metaphor for new life, you can’t celebrate the holiday without running into an egg or two. But in horror, these white ovals are usually not a good thing. In fact, they’re often signs of horrific things to come, particularly flesh-eating monsters of various shapes and sizes.

So, before you crack open one of those candy eggs, check out this list of egg-centric horror to watch this weekend:

Alien (1979)

The eggs of the xenomorph, laid by their queen, are huge, veiny things harboring the infamous face-huggers. Once they burst force from their delicate shell, they seek out whatever fleshy host they can to take over their body before they become full-blown xenomorphs. Plus the way they “hatch” is very, well, vaginal.

EGG

Yes, this is the title of a 2005 Japanese horror film directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi. The film follows a young woman who, whenever she closes her eyes, sees the image of the egg. Then, one day, the egg starts to crack and something begins to fall out of it. She rushes to find out if the image is real or if it’s all in her head.

Xtro

This sci-fi horror sees a man returning to Earth three years after being abducted by aliens. But, he’s not quite human anymore. He also has a mission: lay eggs in unsuspecting women. Xtro is chock-full of wild practical effects that’ll make your skin crawl. Sam’s “birth” scene in particular is truly something to behold.

Critters 2

While this entry could go for all four films in the Critters franchise, the second installment gets a special shoutout. A man dressed in an Easter bunny suit unfortunately stumbles upon a freshly hatched Crite egg and becomes a first meal for the newborns. These little monsters lay blueish-green eggs with red spots. While about the size of a giant chicken egg, they definitely look… off.

Contamination

If you’re looking for something like Alien but way more goofy and Italian, look no further than Luigi Cozzi’s Contamination. Alien eggs, covered in coffee grounds, are smuggled into the US on a cargo ship by astronauts controlled by a giant alien creature. The goop inside these eggs makes humans explode on contact. They’re a weapon of destruction, the tool with which the aliens will take over the planet. This movie is absolutely off-the-walls and would make for perfect post-Easter dinner viewing.
