Dead Silence 750x422 - 5 Terrifying Women You Can Stream Right Now

Women Monsters in film are on my brain this week.

I am on a quest to unearth all of the women monsters in film. Alas, this list will only highlight a select few of the most ghastly gals in the game, and I’m going very specific. For example, Get Out’s Rose (played by Allison Williams) is a true monster, just not the right kind. I figured this week’s streaming guide would be a good place to acknowledge some of the villains that have lived rent-free in our minds for a while now.

Here are 5 Women Monsters Streaming Right Now!

Margaret White, Carrie (1976)

Played by Piper Laurie

Where You Can Watch: Amazon Prime, Pluto, Tubi

Margaret White Carrie 1024x740 - 5 Terrifying Women You Can Stream Right Now

The abused and tormented Carrie White unleashes her powers after classmates at her senior prom finally push her too far. Carrie would not be the patron saint of her sub-genre without the real villain of the movie standing tall behind her. Margaret White is quite possibly the scariest villain in all of horror. She is a villain so evil, that only her white cotton housecoat could contain her. Any parental figure that uses religion as their chosen form of abuse is playing in a whole other ballgame. While it is a great time watching Carrie burn her prom down, the showdown with her mother is what most of us were waiting for the whole time.

Lillith Sullivan, Case 39 (2009)

Played by Jodelle Ferland

Where You Can Watch: Netflix until December 23

A social worker brings a girl home and gets more than she bargained for in Case 39. Lilith is the latest creepy kid that I added to my list of children that terrify me. This demonic child is just so at peace with the death and destruction she brings to the table. At one point she is asked what she is afraid of, and replies, “me,” and I never doubted her again. The fact that she can incite violence with a whisper, but can also annoy her guardian like a real kid, shows a versatility unmatched by others on this list.

Mary Shaw, Dead Silence (2007)

Played by Judith Roberts

Where You Can Watch: Peacock

A man returns home for answers and finds out his family has a sorted past with a deceased ventriloquist. It is time to bring Mary Shaw out into the light and give her her flowers. She is a much more active and sinister possessed object than any of the other cursed doll on James Wan’s resume. She is also not afraid to go after what she wants, and she will walk through a family to get it. I also love seeing roles that let older women be creepy. I am not going to pretend this is the best movie I have ever seen, however, I can say that Mary makes it all worth your time.

Female Cenobite, Hellraiser (1987)

Played by Grace Kirby

Where You Can Watch: Tubi

Female Cenobite 1 - 5 Terrifying Women You Can Stream Right Now

A woman starts killing to reanimate her brother-in-law so he can escape the demonic beings that followed him back from the underworld. You are not wrong for wanting to yell at me that Clare Higgins’ Julia is the real villain of this movie. I know she is and will write that dissertation later in life. However, I chose Kirby because she went from background Cenobite to Jamie Clayton playing Pinhead in next year’s movie. I am living for this and will take any opportunity to talk about it. We love to see a first that is not also a last.

Queen Akasha, Queen of the Damned (2002)

Played by Aaliyah

Where You Can Watch: Tubi

Queen of the damned 1024x576 - 5 Terrifying Women You Can Stream Right Now

The vampire Lestat becomes a rock star whose music awakens the queen of the vampires. I lived for this movie as a kid because I loved Aaliyah, but also happened to notice a real shortage of Black lady vampires in the horror canon. We would also like to fuck shit up in the genre too! That said, I was highly upset that there was so little of her in this movie, because I was not here for Lestat. However, this was the movie I immediately thought of when I heard Anne Rice had passed away.

Did I miss a monster that’s not quite a monster? Let me know at @misssharai and I’ll add it to this weekend’s marathon!
