Our friends over at Indiewire asked 51 directors what’s their favorite scary movie. While many of them listed a lot of the usual suspects, looking at The Shining and The Exorcist. Some went more modern with Midsommar and The Blackcoat’s Daughter. However, some of our favorites chose deep cuts that make a lot of sense when you look at their body of work. Surprising to no one, David Cronenberg was in the latter.

The Baron of Blood, King of Venereal Horror, Grampa Gooey, otherwise known, as the horror royalty David Cronenberg chose Don’t Look Now. The 1973 film follows a married couple grieving the recent death of their young daughter are in Venice when they encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is psychic and brings a warning from beyond.

“This was a movie that really stunned me. I was really very impressed by it,” body-horror legend David Cronenberg said of cinematographer-turned-director Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now in a 2022 interview on the Konbini YouTube channel. Adapted from a 1971 short story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, the 1973 thriller is about grieving parents who are given reason to believe their late daughter isn’t really gone.

“Just a very, very strong movie,” Cronenberg continued. “Very strange. Very much about death, but at first you’re not aware that that’s really the subject matter. It’s really a love story, but it’s really a love story about love and death. Just recently someone said, ‘Tell me a movie that is one of your favorite movies,’ which is very hard to do because there are hundreds of movies that I love. But I did say, Don’t Look Now. —AF

Don’t Look Now stars Julie Christie, Donald Sutherland, and Hilary Mason. The film was directed by Nicolas Roeg. It was written by Daphne Du Maurier (story), Allan Scott (screenplay), and Chris Bryant (screenplay).

I don’t know about you, but if Mr. Cronenberg recommends a movie, I need to see it immediately. Let me know if you’re also about to rent this classic at @misssharai.
