Interview with Alice Strathern, Author of Kaleidoscope Eyes

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Kaleidoscope Eyes?

The struggle to find a true calling in the professional world has been a constant theme for me and some friends. We all were expected to make big decisions at a young age, and we realized we weren’t ready for that.

In this book, I tried to illustrate that it’s a long journey to figure out what you want. It’s also full of ups and downs. As you experience different situations, you never see the world with the same eyes.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Kaleidoscope Eyes, what would they be?

For Karenth Robinson, I would pick “In the End” by Linkin Park. For Ed, Linda, and Nancy, I would pick “Integral” by Pet Shop Boys. For Benny, I would pick “VCR” by The XX.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I definitely love literary fiction. This is my favorite genre. I also enjoy poetry, memoir, and nonfiction. Lately, I’m getting into science fiction. It’s always fun to discover new genres.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov, The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, Atomic Habits by James Clear, and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where Nancy Clavell visits the agency and everyone loses their minds. I think it’s a powerful way to introduce this character and show how one person can change the vibe of an entire office. Her presence always means something.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like listening to my favorite music before a writing session. It gets me in the creative mood.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“It doesn’t matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” Confucius.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The only constant is change. It feels uncomfortable to change your perspective on things, but without that, you won’t be able to discover what else is in store for you.
