Interview with Maggie Carpenter, Author of Rough Rancher

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Rough Rancher?

I’m a horse person. I own a beautiful mare and I’m with her every day. I’ve seen the magic horses can weave in a person’s life, and the idea of a bad boy being turned into a big-hearted cowboy has always appealed to me. And of course, I love cowboys. Many speak horse.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Rough Rancher, what would they be?

If I had to pick a theme song for Callum, it would be Jason Aldean’s A Girl Like You. That’s how Callum feels about Kelly. For Kelly. Rise – by Caroline Jones. In spite of her mother’s determination to see her in a certain kind of life, Kelly blazes her own trail and finds her true self at the ranch with Callum.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

All genres of romance, but I do love suspense. And Cowboys of course!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My TBR list? Sadly I don’t have one. As a full time author I have no time to read, only to write.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Besides the hot sex scenes, there are several moments that are dear to my heart. When Kelly and Callum find each other all over again. Also, at the end with Matt at the top of Line Pine Hill. He’s a secondary character, and I can’t say anything specific about that or it will be a spoiler, but I was crying when I wrote it.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My quirky writing habit? I like to start with a cup of tea at my side, and my dog lying next to me.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My motto is about animals. Be kind. Horses are big and powerful, but incredibly sensitive. Be kind to all the beautiful creatures that share our world. I’m sure there’s a song there.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

One thing to remember after reading my book? There are moments when life throws us curve balls, but there are usually answers if we still our minds and open our hearts. In other words, keep the faith and believe in your dreams like Kelly, Callum, and Matt. On a simpler note, the animals, especially Waggles. He was inspired by a real life Labrador called Wagner.
