Possibly trying to cash in on the success of Terrifier 2 which was released late last year, Dread and Epic Pictures are putting Art the Clown back into theaters in Terrifier (2016) for a limited time.

Who can blame them? The 2022 indie horror film sequel was made for about $250,000 then went on to gross over $10M. That is an oil strike for indie filmmakers. And those coattails are worth riding on for the first film, even if it is almost seven years old.

Despite the business part of filmmaking, fans are probably eager to see the original on the big screen since they didn’t have a chance to on its original run. Terrifier was extremely limited in its release and then headed to VOD shortly after. Its hype span was restricted even though it has gone on to become a cult favorite.

Epic Pictures and Dread CEO and owner Patrick Ewald said in a statement: “When Damien Leone and his team brought Terrifier to Dread Central years ago, we knew that the film was something incredibly special and astoundingly terrifying in the best way possible.  Now, six years later, with millions of Terrifier fans worldwide, we are excited to once again unleash on the big screen this blood-soaked homage to old-school horror and the insanity of Art the Clown.”

Although not as gruesome as its successor, Terrifier does have its moments of intensity. People who have seen the movie always reference that “one” unforgettable set piece.

“Let’s see if you can stomach Art the Clown’s notorious ‘hack saw scene’ on the big screen! Be sure to bring your barf bags,” said the director of both films, Damien Leone, in the Hollywood Reporter.

Terrifier will get its biggest release yet, on 700 screens, July 19.
