Everything old is new again lately. Legacy sequels and sequels that are just popping up decades later are all the rage. Speaking of rage, remember Danny Boyle’s groundbreaking film 28 Days Later? Well, it turns out that Boyle could potentially come back to direct the third entry of the potential trilogy. It turs out that Alex Garland has finished a script that is very good and it has Boyle’s attention.

After 28 Weeks Later was released the big sequel hopes on everyone’s lips was the potential for 28 Months Later. Boyle tells NME that Garland finished the script for 28 Months Later a couple of years back. At the time Boyle was still saying that he wouldn’t return for a sequel. However, times change and so does Boyle’s resolve. He now sounds like he would be interested in a very British and very timely sequel.

“I’d be very tempted [to direct it]. It feels like a very good time actually. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered ‘Bang, this script!’ which is again set in England, very much about England.” Boyle told NME. “Anyway, we’ll see… who knows? It might come back into focus because one of the things that’s happening in the business at the moment is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema, because there are less and less reasons. It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel. But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent.“

It would be great to see Boyle back behind the camera on this one. He recently stepped back in time to direct a sequel to Trainspotting. So, perhaps he is feeling nostalgic.

Would you be excited to see a 28 Days Later sequel from Boyle?
