The peanut butter and jelly like combo of Suda51 and James Gunn was perfection. It placed two worlds together that seemingly needed each other. The result was 2012’s Lollipop Chainsaw. The game wasn’t huge upon release, but over the years it has manged to find a cult status. Plus, it didn’t hurt that Gunn’s involvement in Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad has lead a lot of gamers to seek out and play the title.
“We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us, and did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot.” Suda51 said. “As such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games, and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about development, and are being supported by them in this endeavor.”
Now, Suda51 doesn’t mention Gunn at all in the statement. So, we are hoping that we do hear Gunn’s name come up soon. Especially if there is going to be any new dialogue writing or new levels. If the remake is just an exact clone with updated graphics then its not really a big deal.
Another huge part of Lollipop Chainsaw was the game’s music. The soundtrack was fantastic. It featured the Chordettes, Five Finger Death Punch, The Human League and more. Now, these songs may lead to issues with licensing. So, I’m hoping that Warner Bros. is onboard to assist Suda51 and to give them whatever they need in order to make a proper remake. Pssst. I think if we reach out individually to Warner Bros Games we might be able to help sway their opinion. So, lets get to reaching out. You can reach em at @wbgames on Twitter.
The synopsis for Lollipop Chainsaw goes like this:
The game follows the adventures of Juliet Starling, a San Romero High School cheerleader that got caught in a zombie outbreak lead by a Goth student and five zombie overlords representing types of music; Equipped with a chainsaw, Juliet must use her cheerleading abilities and charm to survive.
Lollipop Chainsaw was a lot of fun. It was a great hack n’ slasher. It really did have a homegrown Troma feel to it as well. Plus, the bizarre dance levels and strange minigames were all spot on for Suda51. To top all the radness off zombie’s spurt glowing hearts instead of arterial spray when Juliet decapitates them. How great is that?
The fact that Juliet keeps her boyfriend’s rotting head “attached at the hip” throughout the game is both full of heart and simultaneously hilarious. A lot of the game fits between those genres and the result is a fun, memorable and re-playable.
