HBO has released the official trailer for the upcoming second season of the historical comedy-drama Gentleman Jack, based on the collected diaries of Anne Lister. The series is scheduled to make its return on April 25, after more than two years since the eight-episode first season ended.

The Gentleman Jack Season 2 trailer, which you can check out below, features Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle’s return as Anne Lister and Ann Walker. It highlights Lister and Walker’s escalating romance as they planned to finally live together. Meanwhile, as Lister’s ambitions continue to grow, she must deal with potential enemies who are threatened by her presence.

Gentleman Jack stars Suranne Jones (Coronation Street) as Anne Lister, Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders), Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones), Timothy West (Bleak House), and Gemma Jones (Bridget Jones’s Diary).

“Set in Yorkshire, 1834, All eyes are on Anne Lister and Ann Walker as they set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple,” reads the logline. “Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with Halifax on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous.

Season 2 will again use the real-life diaries of Anne Lister — part of which were written in code — as its source, with every part of Lister’s story based in historical fact and the five million words she wrote in her journals.”
