Robert Minott revitalizes a classic with his reggae spin on “I Want To Know What Love Is.” Minott was born and raised in St. Andrew, Jamaica and came to the US in 1974. He released his first album Love Struck in 1991 and has been making music ever since. Minott has performed alongside some of reggae’s biggest names like Shaggy and Ziggy Marley. Minott sets the tone for “I Want To Know What Love Is” with his inviting and warm vocals. Minott blends the familiar beats of reggae with the vocals of an R&B song, for an original and unique take on a song we all love. Minott sings with so much feeling and passion I felt like I was listening to “I Want To Know What Love Is” for the first time.

Immediately I’m taken aback by Minott’s effortless vocals, they seem to wrap around the lyrics and caress the beat. Minott’s voice highlights the nuance of “I Want To Know What Love Is” and its evocative nature. He stretches out the notes, sitting into the feelings, showcasing the complexity of love. When Minott belts “I want to know what love is/I want you to show me” you can hear the yearning in his voice, the desire to know despite the possibility of being hurt. Minott’s rendition of “I Want To Know What Love Is” is refreshing and captivating. I got chills as Minott sings “In my life there’s  been heartache and pain/I don’t know if I can face it again/Can’t stop now I’ve traveled so far.” That lyrics always hits hard but Minott takes it to another level. “I Want To Know What Love Is” is a song that can never go out of style because of its truthful subject matter, Minott has found a way to make it his.

One of my favorite aspects of Minott’s “I Want To Know What Love Is,” is how it feels like he suspends time. Minott takes his time on every note, stretching them out, drawing you in. The magic happens when Minott’s vocals are paired with the opening melody. “I Want To Know What Love Is” begins with the familiar beat that makes reggae so recognizable and instantly brings a sense of vitality to the track. Minott’s take on the classic adds an unmistakable warmth and liveliness that offsets the heartfelt lyrics nicely. The lack of melancholia in the melody allows for Minott’s voice to convey his emotional state through his powerhouse performance. Minott is supported by the echoes of back up singers adding to the feelings of longing, yearning, and resolve that Minott is singing about.

Covering a classic can be difficult unless the track really stands on its own, Minott exceeds expectations with “I Want To Know What Love Is.” Minott has made this track his own between the reggae influence and his impassioned vocals. While I knew it was cover, “I Want To Know What Love Is” felt like it was made for Minott to perform. His spin on the melody, on the emotions in the lyrics, made it feel personal and new. It didn’t spark nostalgia in me, Minott’s take is that different. While it remains in the same emotional veins, shares the base tempo with the original, it is completely its own song. I was blown away by all the emotion Minott performs with and the sheer feeling of the song itself. Minott knocked “I Want To Know What Love Is” out of the park by honoring the song itself and showcasing his musical style and artistry.
