Delivering a metal album from the catacombs of a pandemic must feel stranger than fiction at a certain point; sure, it was a universally shared experience and other genres were pushing music out just the same, but something to do with the metal genre and global catastrophes feel like divine intervention. Iva Toric’s upcoming sophomoric release, Dead Reckoning, was born out of that very global crisis and the singles she has been teasing it with are picture-perfect snapshots of a time when the world stood still.

The album’s latest single, “Trust Fall,” is a fantastic addition to the canon of heartbreak and misery, as it tackles trust issues, escaping toxic situations, and the good and bad that can come tied with newfound freedom and possibilities. It’s a frenetic subject to tackle in a fairly calm song, but through Iva Toric’s voice and the help of backing bandmates Gregg Cash and Dylan Howard, the balance of subject matter and tone are airtight.

Functioning as single number three for Toric’s Dead Reckoning LP, “Trust Fall” is a powerfully restrained new track from the multi-instrumentalist. There are the usual metal instrumental flourishes, a transcendentally-produced bridge in the back third, and enough melancholic melodies to make your head explode, but the levity in some of Iva Toric’s vocal choices infused with the pauses the song chooses to take allows “Trust Fall” to put itself above and beyond any of the other singles released thus far. It’s a distinctly different sound made whole by the singles that came before it, and this sharp, new direction for Toric is something that will instantly put the upcoming album on more folks’ radars. This is far from a typical metal release, this new single seems to declare, as it explodes with emotion and a message of overall self-confidence and positivity. The ability for a song to tackle what it takes to break out of a pessimistic mold is rare, but “Trust Fall” manages to accomplish it with moderate ease.

Iva Toric’s San Francisco roots give way to a new kind of metal, as she tackles modern metal in an old-fashioned way. Of her recording process, she says “The band and I use a lot of vintage equipment in our production and recording because we want to strike a harmonious balance between old school garage rock and roll and modern sounds.

The old is new again like the cycles of nature and the ancient cultures who revered and worshiped them.” This unique touch brings a lot of weight to the project as it gives the single a timeless atmosphere to it; Toric seems aware of the capabilities of the metal genre and her respect for the forefathers and future ancestors both dangle in unison, perfectly balanced through her mutual respect. “Trust Fall” marks a brave next chapter for her path as an artist, and will undoubtedly amp up the hype in regards to Dead Reckoning. It’s not every day you get a metal artist as experimental and talented as Iva Toric, and it’s not every day they prove their worth through a trio of knockout introductory singles.
