Music City can be an overwhelming place – Nashville is the mecca for songwriters and dreamers. What can you do to make it to the top? What steps can you take to get through the fray that is thousands (and thousands) of singers, songwriters, bands and artists all vying for the same success? You trust your instincts. That’s the gist of the new song “Instincts” from Nashville’s Talon David. The young pop singer and songwriter clings to the truth and delivers a career-changing hit. Her latest release has all the right moves and is at the tipping point in her career – all signs point to yes for this remarkable artist.

David, who states in her press materials that she grew up in a musical family and discovered that writing and performing music was the outlet she searched for to fully communicate her thoughts, has a stunning voice. Her porcelain-like ethos soars. She never over-sings or stretches the boundaries of the song beyond what sounds so perfectly packaged. I think there are even slight moments when you can hear her gather the strength of the vocals, garnering the gumption. I liked that it felt natural and you can almost imagine her in the recording studio. I never felt like she was throwing all the bells and whistles of what modern recording has impressed upon recordings. It’s just her natural voice. I think she proves that she is vulnerable and relatable – not an easy task to achieve in pop music. It’s one more reason how she sets herself apart from the crowd.

Not only does her voice sway the listener to her side of the story, but the backing music also does the same. The undercurrent, a jazzy, beautiful mix of piano and percussion is sophisticated and emerges as a beguiling essence. While listening there were moments, I felt like the music was perfect for an intimate jazz club and in other instances, I felt as though I was smack in the middle of a corner coffee shop. I loved the dichotomy of it all and the way the arrangements have a tantalizing yet calming attitude. The driving piano speaks softly but carries a big stick. I also felt like the drums hit at the right times and enhanced the piano’s glow even more.

The verdict? “Instincts” is a great pop song, and an even greater musical selection. Great music is great music and fans of several genres will dig this tune. No matter the genre we reviewers slap on music, there is always a sense that we’re boxing something in that shouldn’t be stuck with a label. Maybe that’s the real theme to “Instincts”. Don’t judge something by looking at it in the mirror, and don’t look at the mirror and think you see something that you’re not. Talon David is on her way to making waves and “Instincts” kept me wanting more. “Instincts” is co-written by Songwriter Hall of Fame Inductee Thornton Cline and is available via Clinetel Records. David’s additional releases include “Deep Snow” and “Not My Problem”.
