Steve Lacy announces sophomore album Gemini Rights, shares “Mercury”: Stream

Steve Lacy has announced his forthcoming sophomore album, Gemini Rights, and released the lead single “Mercury.” Stream it below

The LP is set to drop later this summer via RCA Records, though The Internet guitarist has yet to specify a particular release date. In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Lacy did share that the record will be “10 songs,” adding, “My whole philosophy on music is, well, one, get in, get out. I don’t want to take people’s lives. I want them to make a decision to want to keep playing it again. I try my best to make my music to where you want to do that again. I produced about 90% of the record, still. I tried to be like, ‘Oh, I need an executive producer, da, da, da.’ But I ended up still doing it.”

In the sitdown, the singer also teased that about half of the upcoming album was co-written with Fousheé. It serves as a follow-up to his 2019 debut solo effort, Apollo XX1, which included singles “Outro Freestyle” and “Playground.”

As for the new single, it arrives with an accompanying music video in which Lacy wanders around a massive warehouse wearing mask-like sunglasses and a shirt emblazoned with a dollar sign on the front and a target on the back as he sings, “Oh I know myself, my sins/ Dug my pit, then I fell in/ Pulled the trigger, killed us both/ Lesson learned but truth gets old.”

Back in 2020, the artist teamed up with Thundercat, Childish Gambino, and Steve Arrington on “Black Qualls,” one of several collaborations off the former’s album It Is What It Is.
