A few years back, a Reddit user posted what was purported to be footage from id Software’s cancelled DOOM 4. Now video game documentary channel NoClip has released a new documentary featuring more footage from this effort to bring back DOOM before id settled on rebooting the series with 2016’s DOOM.
The documentary talks about how the Noclip crew visited id Software’s headquarters back in 2016 before the release of DOOM, where they were treated to seeing the cancelled project that would have been DOOM 4 before id Software scrapped everything and went ahead with the reboot.
Per GameSpot, DOOM 4 was cancelled due to the game lacking personality, and feeling more like a Call of Duty clone. id Software executive producer Marty Stratton said at the time that the team had “explored a direction and got to a certain point and felt like this really wasn’t capturing what we felt like was going to be a strong DOOM and what the fans would want from it.”
Footage of the cancelled project has appeared online before, but was quickly removed due to copyright issues.
The latest entry in the series, DOOM Eternal, is currently available on all consoles and PC, with the latest releases being on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
