Ben Stiller Had No Idea ‘Severance’ Season 2 Finale Would Be That Bloody

Warning: The Following Contains Spoilers for Severance Season 2, Episode 10, “Cold Harbor”

Things certainly took a turn for the worse in the Severance Season 2 finale today on Apple TV+, but even executive producer and director Ben Stiller had no idea how bloody it would get. Premiering back in 2022, the hit sci-fi thriller captivated audiences with its tale of employees at Lumon Industries, and since then, the show has gone on to become Apple’s most-watched series ever. Hot on the heels of the finale, Apple recently announced that it has been renewed for Season 3.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Stiller touched on the Severance Season 2 finale, which featured the demise of Mr. Drummond (Darri Ólafsson) at the hands of Mark S. (Adam Scott) that concluded with the Lumon Industries enforcer sprawled out on gleaming white tile with bright red blood pooling all around him that looked to be a shot taken straight out of a Dario Argento movie. “There’s something about the visuals of those white hallways,” Stiller said. “When you introduce blood into them, it’s that much more stark and shocking.” When asked if he saw that moment coming, Stiller admitted that he had an idea things might get rough, be even he didn’t know that it would go that far:

“No. It’s just always been a question of security at Lumon. How do they keep control over people? I guess somewhere in my head I thought, ‘well, at some point…’ I never wanted it to be a show where everybody’s walking around with guns or anything like that. It’s not that kind of show. But there has to be some underbelly to this whole thing. So maybe down the line I thought we’d get here, but honestly, I don’t think I knew it would go as far as we did.”

    More to come…
