Supergirl : Woman of Tomorrow is currently in production as the next live-action feature film set in the rebooted DC Universe, following up on James Gunn’s Superman, which debuts in theaters later this summer. Although fans have yet to snag a peek at Milly Alcock as the titular superhero, behind-the-scenes images from the film have surfaced online. Unlike her Kryptonian cousin, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow sees the character travel the galaxy after losing her home planet, Krypton, which leads her to help a young girl seek vengeance for the death of her father.
After keeping filming under wraps for several months, set photos from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow have finally made their way online. They don’t reveal any characters from the upcoming DCU film, but tease the space-bound locations that the Kryptonian hero will be visiting. One image reveals a set being built that looks like a ship, which is not shocking considering the first look at Alcock as Supergirl revealed by Gunn was in a bar set in space. DC Star Reveals How James Gunn’s “First DCU Baby” Has Evolved from Its DCEU Debut
The new DCU under James Gunn has abandoned much of what came before in the DC franchise, but one series has bridged the gap.
As previously teased by Gunn, much of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be shot indoors on a blue screen due to the film mostly taking place on an exotic alien planet. It seems the candid images from the set will likely remain the few fans will be treated to before the film hits theaters next year. However, if the production does indeed do some outdoor filming (there are blue screens set up in the images), the first look at Supergirl could leak online ahead of an official reveal by DC Studios. That said, after Superman failed to keep David Corenswet’s character under wraps, perhaps there are extra precautions in place for Alcock as Kara Zor-El.
Jason Momoa Teases Lobo Design in ‘Supergirl’
While James Gunn and DC Studios have been impressively secretive about the fast-moving production of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Jason Momoa has not been as tight-lipped as of late. The former DCEU star returns to the DC Universe, this time as the lovable anti-hero and occasional supervillain Lobo in the upcoming DCU film. His role seems to be insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but that did not stop him from giving fans a few hints as to the character’s comic-accurate appearance and signature mode of transport.
“I don’t want to give away too much, but I mean, we look pretty dead on, exactly like the character, and he’s pretty rough and gruff and… I’ll say the bike’s really cool.”
The second film set in the DCU, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, will take care of introducing the alien side of the cinematic universe. It will also see a version of the superhero most audiences aren’t familiar with, molded by a unique origin story that is far more grisly and unforgiving than Kal-El’s upbringing in Smallville. Based on the comic by Tom King, Woman of Tomorrow is the strongest indicator that the studio is focusing on good scripts over a specific set-in-stone movie slate.
