Major DC Studios Shakeup Could Occur if Paramount Takes Over

Some new updates have emerged regarding what the future of the DCU may look like if Paramount winds up merging with Warner Bros. Discovery.

Paramount Skydance is one of several companies who is interested in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery. Any potential deal is far from being made official at this point in time; however, Paramount’s David Ellison has reportedly been fairly aggressive in its efforts to merge with David Zaslav’s company. Warner Bros. Pictures owns DC Studios, meaning there could be some changes to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU should the merger ultimately go through.

What could the Paramount & WB merger mean for the DCU?

According to a recent report from Puck, a potential Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. merger could see Gunn and Safran have less control of what gets made at DC Studios.

The article notes that Paramount Pictures co-chair Josh Greenstein would be “more than happy” to work with Weapons director Zach Cregger on making a DC movie if the merger were to happen.

“As things now stand at Warner Bros., James Gunn and Peter Safran control who directs DC movies, choices they make after they have developed scripts to their liking,” the article states. “It sounds like change may be in the wind if, indeed, the Ellisons prevail.”

Paramount Pictures declined to comment on the matter when asked by Puck. No further details are available at this time.

Gunn and Safran’s DCU — which began in December 2024 with the animated Creature Commandos series and also so far includes Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 — continues in 2026 with Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl movie starring Milly Alcock, the Lanterns TV show with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, and the Clayface movie co-written by Mike Flanagan that will see Tom Rhys Harries play the titular Batman villain. The Superman follow-up movie, Man of Tomorrow, then arrives in July 2027.
