Cassidy Needed Tough Love from the Right Person

Cassidy Needed Tough Love from the Right Person

It’s taken nine episodes of Sheriff Country to get some backstory on Cassidy, finally.

The series did offer a little insight into an abusive relationship she was in sometime in the past, and then we got a tease that something happened to her sister, but it’s taken nine episodes to really get into it.

It’s undoubtedly a heartbreaking backstory, and it’s one that she’s arguably been hiding from, but that tough love during the Sheriff Country Season 1 fall finale was just what she needed.

    Cassidy’s Backstory Explained

When a domestic violence call came through the radio, Cassidy decided to take it. She knew once she heard the radio what this was about.

Once she and Hank got there, it didn’t take long to learn that the call was to Cassidy’s mom’s home, and while Cassidy’s mom didn’t want her there, she was going to be there for this challenging moment.

We knew that something had happened to Cassidy’s sister, but it felt a little like she had died young in some incident.

Well, there’s a chance Cassidy’s sister isn’t dead. She went missing on the way to a party, and nobody has seen her since.

Sheriff Country showrunner, Matt Lopez, teases that this is going to become a bigger mystery to unravel in the second half of the season, and that’s only possible because of the tough love Cassidy got during the episode.

When Cassidy became a cop, she did look into her sister’s disappearance, but not hard enough.

Cassidy decided there was nothing to be done and chose not to conduct her own investigation. And when you listen to her reason why, it makes sense.

There’s something about hope, even if it is false hope. By not looking into what happened to her sister that night, Cassidy can believe that her sister is alive somewhere out there.

However, that’s not the way she can keep listening to her life.

Hank Had to Be the One

In the end, Hank was the one to deliver Cassidy some tough love, making it clear that Cassidy couldn’t keep hiding from the truth.

Mickey grew up in Edgewater, so she must have known the story, and yet it hasn’t come up once since Cassidy became a deputy.

Is it because Mickey believes that there’s nothing that can be done, or is it because she knows that delivering the tough love wouldn’t have sounded the same?

This had to come from someone with little personal connection to Cassidy.

A friend can say, “You should look into this,” but it’s easy to brush that off. You know that a friend is going to care.

When it comes from someone you don’t know as well — and even someone who hasn’t shown that they really care about you — the words hit differently.

That’s what happened in the Sheriff Country Season 1 fall finale. Cassidy saw a man whom she knew a little but viewed more as her competition show some consideration and respect.

He doesn’t have to like her to see that she could do more, and she could even be the change that she would like to see in the department.

Hank didn’t judge that Cassidy had decided to opt for hope rather than the truth, but he did point out that she was doing herself an injustice.

Cassidy became a cop for a reason, and we know that reason was to help people. She doesn’t want people to go through what she has, but now it’s time to support herself.

This was the moment for Cassidy to realize that she couldn’t move forward if she didn’t have the truth, and only someone completely impartial from her and her family could help her see that.

Hank’s words clearly hit something in her, because at the end of Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 9, we see her pull the report of her sister’s disappearance out.

She knows that she needs to stop running and hiding, and only Hank could have gotten through to her.

Now we’ll have another mystery to unravel once Sheriff Country returns (and has dealt with the current siege situation), and it offers more hope that Cassidy’s character will be developed further.

I’m also here for more of Cassidy and Hank’s blossoming friendship, as I could see them being great partners.

Let’s keep the conversation going — it’s the only way the good stuff survives.
