Avengers: Doomsday Update Is Great News for MCU Fans Who Loved Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Avengers: Doomsday has received a major update that could excite fans of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who wrote the upcoming Spider-Man movie, have confirmed they are working on Marvel’s next Avengers films.

Speaking to The Wrap, Destin Daniel Cretton revealed that McKenna and Sommers left the Spider-Man movie during production. They moved on to work on the next two Avengers films. Justin Kuritzkes later joined Spider-Man: Brand New Day as a writer. The Challengers writer worked on the movie during production, and he also handled rewrites. His final credit is listed as “additional literary material.”

McKenna and Sommers later confirmed their work on the Avengers movies. However, they did not reveal what they are writing or share any story details. Sommers said, “We’re happy to say we are involved with the Avengers. We can’t really say much more than that. We love working with Marvel and we have a relationship with the Russos, and it’s a pleasure. It’s a real pleasure.”

McKenna and Sommers previously wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The pair also worked on Ant-Man and the Wasp. They shared writing duties on that movie with Paul Rudd, Andrew Barrer, and Gabriel Ferrari.

Who else is involved with Avengers: Doomsday besides Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers?

Joe and Anthony Russo are directing Avengers: Doomsday. The brothers previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Stephen McFeely is also writing Doomsday after working with the Russos on several earlier Marvel films.

Michael Waldron has contributed to the scripts for both Doomsday and Secret Wars. He previously created Loki and wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. The cast also includes Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Pedro Pascal, Florence Pugh, and several returning X-Men stars.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17, 2027.
