A Nintendo icon has teased that the simple title of The Legend of Zelda movie might be hiding a big secret. The anticipated live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s blockbuster video game franchise is helmed by Wes Ball (Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes).
During a recent Nintendo Direct, dedicated to the upcoming movie, legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that the movie is called The Legend of Zelda, without a subtitle. And there’s a crucial reason for that, reports IGN.
Miyamoto explained, “Once you see the film, you’ll understand why there isn’t a subtitle.” He also teased Triforce’s role in the movie, saying, “We’ll share more details at a later time, so please look forward to it.”
What else do we know about the new The Legend of Zelda movie?
The Legend of Zelda movie was initially announced in 2023 and was shot last winter in New Zealand.
In the new Nintendo Direct, it was confirmed that the Zelda movie won’t be based on any one game in the franchise. Instead, it will be based on all the stories from the series so far. According to Miyamoto, it’s “an original film based on the many stories, ideas, and concepts of the series, built up through the games for 40 years.”
At the moment, the exact story details for the movie are under wraps. However, early speculation suggests that the plot will follow an elf-like warrior, Link, and Princess Zelda on a quest to save the magical land of Hyrule from Ganondorf.
The leading cast includes Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Son of a Critch, The Haunting of Bly Manor) as Link, Bo Bragason (Sterling Point, The Radleys) as Princess Zelda, and Uli Latukefu as the main antagonist, Ganondorf.
The movie has Shigeru Miyamoto as a co-producer, alongside Avi Arad. The Legend of Zelda hits theaters on April 30, 2027. While it hasn’t been fully confirmed, a sequel could be in the works.
