Golden Axe stars Danny Pudi and Carl Tart spoke with ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese about the new Paramount+ TV show. The duo discussed their characters in the show, bringing new fans to the franchise, and Pudi gave an update on whether the Community movie will finally happen. Golden Axe premieres September 16, 2026, on Paramount+.
“In a hilarious homage to Sega’s iconic 1989 video game, Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who just won’t seem to stay dead. Their quest is complicated by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities. As they journey through a dangerous fantasy world, the group faces formidable enemies, unexpected allies, and mounting chaos driven by their clashing personalities. Forced to work together despite their flaws, they must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all. Blending epic action with irreverent humor, Golden Axe explores what it truly means to be a hero,” says the official synopsis.
Tyler Treese: Danny, you’re playing an original character. He’s trying to become an adventurer, and you’re kind of playing the viewer’s entry point into the story and the world of Golden Axe. What did you like most about being that perspective and being kind of the outsider that’s thrust into this adventure?
Danny Pudi: First of all, thank you. And I love the backdrop. As you said, I play a new character, Hampton. He is the most inexperienced of the group. He’s new to this world. He’s essentially a fan as if they’re dropped into the world of Yuria, which for me was exciting.
I actually didn’t play the game as a kid. And so when I heard about this, I thought it was exciting to bring kind of a new energy and to play someone who is truly experiencing this for the first time. And that was just really exciting for me as an actor to play.
But also, I think it’s kind of cool to celebrate something that’s so beloved, to have original characters, but also have something new, a new twist to it for people who maybe haven’t experienced it.
Carl, I love the flashiness of Chronos. Visually, he’s kind of the coolest-looking character, but he has this confidence to him, even when he shouldn’t. It can backfire occasionally. How was it kind of leaning into that aspect for your performance?
Carl Tart: It’s very fun. It’s the most fun thing to do when you’re doing a comedy, the confident idiot, in my opinion. I just think it’s the most fun to have.
You get kind of the most freedom because you can just kind of be loud and lean in super hard, and you kind of never lose because you don’t know you’re losing, even when you lose. You know what I’m saying? That’s the way it is.
Danny, there’s like a pure-hearted nature to your character. He’s a bit doe-eyed and optimistic, and it pairs so well with Matthew. He’s playing a grouchy dwarf. What about Hampton specifically resonated with you in terms of his kind of looking for the positive in things?
Danny Pudi: Oh, I think you said it perfectly. I think there is—it’s not naivete, but he is earnest. There’s an earnestness there with Hampton where he is really trying to prove his worth amongst this group of proven warriors.
Over the course of time, you see him building his confidence and adding value to the team. But he is also not willing to, I guess, lose his moral compass, which is really interesting in this world where you’re faced with life and death around every corner. There’s skeletons chasing you and daggers and magic.
He is also just as concerned about his friendship and interactions with strangers. And I think that’s just a fun thing to play in games where there’s no time. There’s never any time because it’s always life or death and you have to get to the next level. But I’m always concerned about, like, well, what was the impact I left on that person?
Hampton is really concerned about that, which is frustrating with Gilius at times, but also really fun to play with comedically.
Carl, I was curious, you guys have two great creatives at the helm, Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler. What about their vision for the show really made you want to be involved with it?
Carl Tart: I mean, I love both of their work so much. I’m a huge American Dad fan and love the Seth MacFarlane cinematic universe, of course. And so I was really excited just to work with them and work with Jonah, and I knew whatever they put their hands on was gonna be great.
So, of course, I was like, yeah, I’m in. I know it’s gonna be fun. I know it’s gonna have great jokes. That’s what I love about adult animation. It is just joke-heavy, a joke a minute. You know what I mean?
Danny, my last question, I love Community. I know it’s been slow-moving since there are so many different parts and schedules. It seems like everybody wants to do the movie, though. Are you optimistic, like your character in Golden Axe, that this will actually happen down the line?
Danny Pudi: Oh, I’m bringing my Hampton energy full force. Yes, I’m very optimistic. Like you said, I think we’re so appreciative that people are still connecting with the show and it’s resonating.
I think all of us, we’re still super tight as a group. We’re all close, and we’re all, I think, kind of excited to be literally just in a room together, in a study room together, and see how it feels just to goof around. I mean, we spent so much time together that we’re like family, and when it does happen, I think it’ll be really, really fun.
Thanks to Danny Pudi and Carl Tart for taking the time to talk about Golden Axe.
