The Odyssey is contributing to a major global box-office milestone for Universal. According to the latest reports, the movie’s box office has helped the studio reach remarkable success.
As reported by Variety, Universal has crossed $5 billion globally for the third time in its history, helped by The Odyssey’s box-office performance. The studio is also notably the first to reach this milestone in 2026.
The Odyssey follows the Greek hero Odysseus as he spends 10 years trying to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film became Universal’s highest-grossing film in the studio’s history, grossing $1.7 billion from box offices worldwide. The movie is even ranked No. 10 among MPA films of all time internationally.
With this week’s grosses, Universal-distributed flicks have successfully collected $1.788 billion domestically and $3.218 billion internationally to date. This box office haul notably comes from the blockbuster projects from Universal Pictures, Illumination, DreamWorks Animation, and Focus Features.
The blockbusters behind Universal’s $5 billion run
This year, only five films topped $1 billion worldwide, and three of these blockbusters were distributed by Universal: The Odyssey, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Michael.
Michael, the film about Michael Jackson’s rise to global icon status, has grossed $1.028 billion at the box offices worldwide. The Lionsgate movie, distributed internationally by Universal, did wonders, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing music biopic, and soaring past Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biopic overall.
The other movies rounding out the billion-dollar club notably include Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 5.
Universal isn’t done with its movie slots just yet. As of this writing, the remaining films from the studio’s 2026 slate include DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island, Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s Other Mommy, Focus Features’ Sense & Sensibility, Focus’ Elsinore, Focker-In-Law, Violent Night 2, and Werwulf.
