Mous x Mercedes-AMG F1 Team Backpack Review: Performance Gear That Looks Luxury

Performance bags usually ask you to accept a compromise. Tough but ugly. Clever but bulky. The Optimal Protective Lid Backpack from Mous, made for the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, is the rare exception: a technical carry that looks like it belongs in a considered wardrobe.

It is a 25 litre backpack with 18 purpose-built pockets, an impact-absorbing tech compartment and a cabin-friendly shape that fits under the seat on most airlines. It is also the same bag the team uses, and you can buy it directly from Mous. Our short verdict is that it ticks boxes you did not know needed ticking, and it does so without shouting about it.

Built for a team that lives in airports

The Formula 1 calendar runs to 24 races a year, which makes the team’s engineers, mechanics and marketers some of the most frequent travellers in any industry. Ordinary backpacks do not survive that schedule for long.

Mous developed the bag by speaking directly to those people. Engineers carry laptops and a tangle of cables. Mechanics need durability. Marketers want something presentable. The team’s brief was specific and difficult: take Mous’s most advanced pack, the Extreme Commuter, and make it lighter, with more external pockets and more travel features, without giving up durability or tech protection.

The result is the Optimal range, which Mous describes as the best of the Extreme Commuter made lighter, with more storage. After several rounds of prototyping, this is the finished bag.

    Every pocket earns its place

This is where the Optimal wins us over. Eighteen pockets sounds like a recipe for chaos, but the layout is logical enough that you stop thinking about it within a day.

The quick-access pockets sit on the outside: one on the lid, one underneath, a water bottle holder on one side and a deeper pocket on the other that takes a large power bank. Inside, a wraparound zip lets the main compartment open completely flat, so you can pack in order and see everything at once. Stretch mesh holds headphones. A hidden pocket takes an AirTag. A dedicated passport pocket sits on the back panel with a flat YKK zip, so it never digs into you.

The real test is the moment of panic at an airport. With the Optimal, the first pocket you check is the right one. Passport. Check. Wallet. Check. That small removal of anxiety is worth more than any spec on the page.

    Protection without the bulk

Mous built its name on protection, and the Optimal keeps that promise while shedding weight. The bag comes in at 1.55kg because unnecessary foam was stripped out of the construction, while AiroFoam lines the full tech compartment. AiroFoam is a non-Newtonian material, which means it stays flexible until an impact, then hardens to absorb the energy. Mous rates it to protect laptops and tablets in drops of up to 1.2 metres.

The tech compartment sits against the back, separate from everything else. The laptop pocket takes up to a 16 inch MacBook Pro without a sleeve, and every MacBook Air. A second padded pocket takes an iPad Pro 12.9 inch or anything smaller. The lining is scratch-resistant.

The outer is 840D ballistic nylon with reinforced 500D panels and a coating that resists water and abrasion. The YKK zips are PU-coated to hold off light rain. Mous is clear that the bag is highly water-resistant but not submersible, which is an honest line and the right one to draw.

A quick word on testing. We were tempted to put the protection claims through their paces, and we chose not to. The bag looks too good to risk, and it has quickly become a piece we cherish rather than punish.

Formula 1 design, without the fuss

The Optimal feels, looks and flows like a Formula 1 car. The lines are streamlined, and the shape makes sense given how much space sits inside. The Midnight colourway is beautiful: deep black, clean, and quietly technical.

Then there is the branding. Collaborations tend to be loud, with logos enlarged so nobody can miss the partnership. Here the AMG F1 mark is small and understated, which puts the attention on the bag itself. Credit to the design team for that restraint.

One detail we like: every member of the team carries a bag embroidered with their own number, such as 63 for George Russell and 12 for Kimi Antonelli. According to Mercedes, that embroidery is the only difference between the team bags and the one you can buy.

Comfortable enough for the long day

The back panel is breathable mesh, designed to let air flow through rather than trap heat. The straps are padded, adjustable and ergonomically shaped to suit different builds. The weight is balanced so the bag sits well through a full day of walking.

Travel features round it out. A luggage pass-through slides over suitcase handles, lash straps on the base hold extra items, and the protective lid closes with an aluminium G-hook and magnetic side panels. Mous notes that its own sternum strap technically fits but is not recommended, so do not expect to add one.

    What to weigh up

The Optimal is a sizeable bag. At 25 litres and 450mm tall, it suits people who carry a lot, and it may be more than you need if you want a slim, minimal commuter. The ballistic nylon version we reviewed weighs 1.55kg, which is lighter than Mous’s Extreme Commuter range but not featherweight. And while the water resistance is strong, this is not a bag to drop in a river.

If weight is your main concern, Mous also makes the bag in ULTRATEX®. It is a lighter build that Mous says is just as protective. If the F1 connection is not for you, there is the standard Optimal Protective Lid Backpack without the team branding, as well as the Day x Mercedes Flap Backpack for a more streamlined carry.

The verdict from buyers is strong too. The bag holds 4.61 out of 5 from 160 reviews on Mous’s site, with praise for the build quality, padded straps, cool back panel and organisation. It also comes with a 25 year warranty under Mous’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

    The verdict

If you fly often, commute with a laptop, or simply resent digging around for your passport, this is the bag to buy. It solves real problems quietly, protects your tech properly, and looks better than almost anything in the performance category. It is rare to find a bag this functional that also feels like a luxury object.
