Idina Menzel Recalls ‘Really Hard’ Split From Taye Diggs

Idina Menzel is reflecting on her split from Taye Diggs, and how she juggled multiple projects simultaneously, more than one decade later.

“We were separating, and it was really hard,” Menzel, 55, shared at a retrospective New York Comic Con panel on Thursday, October 8, per People, referring to the release of Frozen and Broadway’s If/Then being the same year as their 2013 split.

“The story of the show was so much about a woman who’s making different choices in her life and finding her identity,” Menzel said of playing Elizabeth in If/Then. “And then Frozen was coming up just as Taye — we were breaking up.”

Menzel then noted that her hit track “Let It Go,” which she sang as Elsa in Frozen, took off at the same time.

Idina Menzel and ex-husband Taye Diggs publicly faced struggles as a result of their interracial relationship. “It’s very complicated. I mean, [we’re] very supportive of each other always. [I’m] so excited for him. The thing that came into play more — and he’s talked about it too — is the interracial aspect of it,” Menzel, […]

“The poor guy,” she quipped of Diggs, 55. “It was ‘Let It Go.’ He’s in a mall and he’s like, ‘F*** this!’ It’s everywhere, ‘Let It Go, Let It Go.’ Like, ‘I can’t let it go!’”

“It was very complicated, that whole time,” she continued, noting that If/Then and Frozen “saved me. It was filling my heart with joy and love and forgiveness and all of that stuff. And also being able to show my son this wonderful film.”

Menzel and Diggs met in 1995 while starring in the original Broadway cast of Rent and tied the knot in 2003. The pair welcomed son Walker in 2009 before separating four years later. Since their split, Diggs has been candid about coparenting with Menzel.

“It’s fairly simple with us. We’ve always tried to put [our son] first,” Diggs exclusively told Us in 2025. “Because we do that, it doesn’t really leave room for us to speak negatively about each other. We want him to have as smooth and loving relationship as possible with all of us involved.”

“The more we all can get along, the better it is for him and the more love and positive energy he gets,” Diggs explained to Us. “We’re pretty proud about the way that we handled our relationship. Hopefully, it will continue.”

While Walker has acting in his blood, Diggs shared that the pair’s son is more interested in pursuing athletics.

“It’s all about basketball and weight training,” he said. “It’s been really fun just watching him take athletics so seriously and at the same time focusing on his academics. I give all that credit to his mother. His mother is making sure that his academics stay up to [par]. I was terrible at school, but he seems to be acing it. I’m happy. I’m happy for him and relieved for myself.”
