VisionQuest just dropped a massive clue about one of Marvel’s oldest and most overlooked superheroes. The Disney+ series teases the return of Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, through a fiery Easter egg in its second episode.

VisionQuest teases the history of Jim Hammond, aka original Human Torch

Marvel’s VisionQuest hints at a significant android predecessor in its second episode. The show briefly features a fiery figure who appears to be Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch. Hammond technically made his MCU debut in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, where his suit sat on display at the Stark Expo under the label “Synthetic Man.”

In the new Disney+ series, Jarvis cautions Vision about the perils of unchecked feelings. He describes a figure consumed by fire, strongly suggesting Hammond’s identity without naming him directly. Vision then reflects on this predecessor, calling him a warning about what happens when emotions spiral out of control.

Vision refers to Hammond as the first of his kind and labels him a cautionary example. He suggests that Hammond’s emotional volatility led to devastating consequences. The show keeps the specifics of Hammond’s downfall deliberately vague for now.

In Marvel’s comic book history, scientist Phineas T. Horton constructed Hammond in 1939 as an advanced synthetic being. His body’s solar cells granted him the power to burst into flame. He first appeared in Marvel Comics #1, created by Carl Burgos for Timely Comics, the publisher that later became Marvel.

Hammond shares no connection with Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby simply reused the Human Torch name and fire abilities decades later. Hammond’s biggest storylines involved the Invaders, a wartime superhero squad featuring Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Namor, and Hammond’s young partner Toro.

The series has yet to officially identify the character or reveal his full backstory. How much of Hammond’s extensive comic history VisionQuest plans to adapt remains an open question going forward.
