Ocean’s 14 Production Update, George Clooney on Heist Movie

George Clooney shared an important production update for Ocean’s 14 and explained why he plans to revive the heist franchise.

Why is George Clooney doing Ocean’s 14?

It’s been nearly 20 years since Clooney last played Danny Ocean in the Ocean’s franchise. Now, Clooney is getting the gang back together for Ocean’s 14, the next installment in the famous heist franchise.

In an interview with Variety, Clooney revealed that the inspiration for the next Ocean’s movie will be Going In Style, a 1979 dramedy about three aging men who decide to rob a bank. Ocean’s 14 will not be a nostalgia play, but rather an examination of a “heist when you’re no longer young and spry.”

“There was something about the idea that we’re too old to do what we used to do, but we’re still smart enough to know how to get away with something that just appeals to me,” Clooney said. “They’ve lost a step, and they need to find a way to work around their limitations.”

In Ocean’s 14, Clooney will be joined by several of his co-stars from the Ocean’s movies, including Matt Damon as Linus Caldwell, Brad Pitt as Rusty Ryan, Julia Roberts as Tess Ocean, and Don Cheadle as Basher Tarr. In November, Andy Garcia also said he would return for Ocean’s 14 as Terry Benedict.

Last month, Clooney confirmed the Ocean’s 14 start date.

“We just got the budget approved at Warner Brothers, and we’re trying to set up,” Clooney said. “It’s just scheduling, so it’s just setting a start date for us. Probably start in about nine or ten months, shooting.”

Ocean’s 14 has not confirmed a director. David Leitch, who directed Pitt in Bullet Train, was last in talks to helm the next Ocean’s movie. Steven Soderbergh, who directed three Ocean’s movies, is not expected to direct the fourth movie.

    Soderbergh’s three movies — 2001’s Ocean’s Eleven, 2004’s Ocean’s Twelve, and 2007’s Ocean’s Thirteen — combined to gross over $1 billion worldwide.
