Paramount Pictures has finally broken their silence about the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 horror hit Crawl. Directed by Alexandre Aja, who also helmed the original film, Crawl 2 will deliver the same intense, action-packed horror that made the first one such a hit. As a fan favorite horror director, Alexandre Aja made a name for himself in the horror community directing modern classics like High Tension and Piranha 3D. Aja is also producing the film alongside horror legend Sam Raimi, who also produced the first Crawl. Raimi’s involvement ensures that the sequel will maintain the same level of quality. Joining Aja and Raimi are screenwriters Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan, who are normally known for their found footage work.
One of the most exciting aspects of Crawl 2 is the new setting. While the original film takes place in the humid, wet hell of Florida — where the characters were trapped in a flooded house with deadly alligators — according to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel will shift the terror out of the Florida swamps and into the urban landscape of New York City. The location change of Crawl 2 will introduce a whole new set of dangers that the characters must face.

New Location, New Dangers, New Cast
While one would imagine Crawl 2 would continue the basic “person vs. reptile” dynamic of the original film, the move to an urban environment opens up new possibilities for this creature-feature franchise. NYC is far from a swamp. Will Aja give us some horrific variation on the ‘alligators in New York sewers’ urban myth? We have several possibilities for other species native to New York; who knows, maybe there’s an infestation of snapping turtles or beavers…
Crawl 2 will feature a brand-new cast, bringing fresh faces to the franchise. While details about the cast have yet to be revealed, the decision to introduce a new lineup of bodies, ahem, characters suggests that the sequel could just be entirely independent of the first film and only connected by the concept of people fighting animals during floods. In which case, Crawl could continue for quite some time, especially as water levels rise…

We talk with Alexandre Aja about his latest movie Crawl and his career making horror movies in our exclusive interview.
It is no surprise that this film is getting a sequel. The original Crawl was a certified hit in 2019, earning over $91 million worldwide on a budget of just below $14 million. The film’s overwhelming success was due in large part to the strong performances from stars Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper, so the sequel needs to secure some scream queens and kings to keep the franchise afloat. Crawl 2 is currently in deep development, with production beginning later this year.
