‘Resident Evil’ Reboot Is Zach Cregger’s Version of an Origin Story, Says Kali Reis

Resident Evil will be Zach Cregger‘s first movie based on an established property, but it sounds like the filmmaker will maintain the originality he displayed in Weapons and Barbarian.

Speaking with Screen Rant, actress Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”) praised the reboot as a “continuation of great filmmaking,” noting that Resident Evil is Cregger’s version of an origin story.

“I will say, for the Resident Evil fans, especially people who are gamers, his crack at an origin story — his version of this — is amazing,” Reis says.

“I think you guys are going to be blown away by his imagination, his ideas, and this kind of comedic journey through this crazy, wild time in this Resident Evil story. I think you’re going to be pleasantly surprised.”

Cregger, who co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapters 3 and 4) previously commented, “I consider Resident Evil an original thing, and I think you will too when you see it.”

He also stated, “I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games. I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.”

Will Cregger be able to please both his own fan base and the Resident Evil faithful? We’ll find out when the film opens September 18 via Sony.

Austin Abrams (Weapons), Paul Walter Hauser (“Black Bird”), Zach Cherry (“Severance”), and Johnno Wilson (“Twisted Metal”) also star.

Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan are producing.

Constantin’s Oliver Berben and Davis Films’ Victor Hadida serve as executive producers, with TriStar Pictures’ president Nicole Brown overseeing the project for Sony.
