Paul Rudd’s New Music Movie With Nick Jonas Gets Promising RT Reviews

Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas‘ new musical comedy film is yet to be released, but early reviews have already surfaced. These paint a primarily positive picture, with critics praising the tone, style, and performances, among other aspects, resulting in a commendable Rotten Tomatoes score. It earlier premiered at the Dublin International Film Festival on March 1, and will arrive in the United States on May 29.

What critics are saying about Power Ballad in reviews?

A majority of critics praised Power Ballad for being a crowd-entertainer. They also seem to be impressed by the humor, style, and performances, particularly Paul Rudd’s.

Sean Boelman of FandomWire deemed the film’s “heart” its strongest element. He also said that it was more humorous than director John Carney’s previous filmography. Further, he praised Rudd’s acting, noting he brought “an effortless charm to his lead role.” Boelman also commended co-lead Nick Jonas’ performance, calling it “likely one of the best in his career.”

We Live Entertainment‘s Scott Menzel opined that it was the “best” movie he saw at South by Southwest (SXSW). Further, he wrote, “Power Ballad is a genuine crowd pleaser with real emotion, heart, and a phenomenal soundtrack.”

Rachel Leishman of The Mary Sue said in her review that the film’s main highlight is its “ability to connect with the audience through music.” She added that it is “more hopeful and uplifting” compared to Carney’s earlier work.

However, not all critics were impressed by Power Ballad. Slant Magazine‘s Chris Barsanti remarked it “merely hums when it should soar.” He added that, like the tense dynamic between Rudd and Jonas’ characters, it “never finds the right groove.”

Power Ballad gets a strong score on Rotten Tomatoes

Thanks to its predominantly positive reception, Power Ballad has scored an 87% approval rating, as of writing, on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, this is based on 30 reviews and is expected to change once more reviews come in.

In addition to directing, Carney co-wrote the screenplay with Peter McDonald. He also co-produced with Anthony Bregman, Peter Cron, Rebecca O’Flanagan, and Robert Walpole.

Besides Rudd and Jonas, the movie features Marcella Plunkett, Jack Reynor, and Havana Rose Liu, among others.
